I certainly hope you are wrong. The flavor of the two games is so different that much would be lost if SH4 simply took the place of SH3. Both games continue to have great potential.

Agreed, both theaters in SH4 will florish. No doubt in my mind.

I played Silent Hunter III for years, but SHIV with the new add-on looks interesting. Once GWX has been released for SHIV I will probably get the game. I’m visiting here to get the hang of things because modding apparently is somewhat different for SHIV.

There are plenty of good mods already out there for SH4. You don't need to wait on GWX to enjoy the game with all the mods that have been put out there already.

You actually might be surprised at the high quality of the mods currently available.
GWX has quite a task in front of them, just to catch up. The bar is being raised higher and higher every day.

Respectfully Submitted;

yeah probably.

At any rate, as a game, both SH3 and SH4 have their pro's and cons. If i were to play SH3 again, there are things that i will miss from SH4. Just as there are things that i miss from SH3 now that i play sh4.

SH4:

Pros
+ Looks very nice
+ Some new cool features introduced (more mission types etc.)
+ Active modding community, quite a few big mods out there

+/- Pacific theater

Cons
- Still in it's baby shoes, well maybe going thru puberty, but not older than that.
- Can be too demanding for abit older machines

SHIII

Pros
+ Have had time to "age", most bugs fixed
+ Works on abit older machines too
+ Still very active community, tons of mods
+ GWX

+/- Atlantic theatre

Cons
- Getting old graphics wise, rather long loading times

Aaand this is what Ithink.

In a nutshell...pretty good conclusion.

Of all people, Mikhayl, you're one I thought could appreciate both games at the same time. I'm shocked because you are among the best informed about the strengths of SH3.

Personally, what drove me from SH3 to SH4 a year ago was the talent SH3 has for forgetting save game files. This is especially vexing when you have a month invested in a career. So although I hadn't learned enough about SH3 to miss it, after I got SH4 and found it had no such problem, I never went back.

I loaded it up a month ago and was impressed with it! So I'll take your opinion as informed high praise for SH4. I'm interested in just what makes that "no way back" contrast for you.

This may sound strange coming from someone who has yet to even play SH4, but I think it won't be long before I'm done with SH3.

I take it from the reference to Grey Wolves that you're fairly new to subsims, or at least to these two? As has been pointed out, GWX is the end result of years of patient testing, years that SH4 hasn't had time to work through. And, as has also been pointed out, that working through is well under way.

I'll be dropping SH3 because SH4 is obviously the better platform. I just finished watching all the U-Boat Add-On videos, and just the interiors of the subs, and the crews, are much more life-like, both in appearance and animation. Just eye candy for some; deep immersion for others. Also, new mods are still being developed for SH3, but some of them are based on SH4 technology, or SH4 ideas, and others, such as the Kiel Locks, are being done for both, anticipating the move to SH4 entirely.

As for the interface: on the one hand, we get used to one and a new one seems odd. On the other, it has been well proven that interfaces are fairly easy to change (well, at least for some folks). I think it's only a matter of time before we see both reduced interfaces (FLB Sales's Simfeeling Mod) and increased interfaces (OLC's GUI) in SH4.

I would guess that before we know it we'll be talking about SH3 as what we used to play, and SH4 will have everything SH3 has and more; it will be the best ever, at least until the next even better development comes along, which makes even it look old.

Right now I'm too busy teaching El Ducimo how to be sarcastic (yeah, check the spelling, Duci).:rotfl:

The only thing going for SH3 is the gameplay. Graphics, as mentioned before, is getting old.

Dowly you da man! I really dig Mr. Bean!

As much as I loved SH3...she was the girl you dated before you got back with the one you really wanted to marry, at least for me. Maybe it's playing my 'own side'. Maybe it's the fact that I just think fleet boats were the most bad-ass of WWII subs. Maybe I like the blue Pacific better than the grey Atlantic. Whatever the reasons, SH4 just speaks to me more than the #3.
