It seems that you are doing quite well! Just don't rely on the TC too much.
It is better if you play the game at 1x speed from time to time especially when attacking a convoy. You will learn many things observing the behaviour of the destroyers. This early war experience will serve you well when you will have to deal with late war convoys and task forces.

At least, this is my experience.
