Hiya folks! I've tried searching the net for some decent 3-way views of subs but came up wanting. Anyone has any or know a site for any? The more details on the plans the better. It's for a private project in 3D I'm planning so any assistance would be appreciated.

You didn't say what era, I'm assuming WW2 subs? Also, what country / class. Modelling websites tend to have some very good quality downloadable plans.

Naval Historical Ships Association has basic build plans of the USS Sand Lance...
http://hnsa.org/doc/pdf/ss381.pdf ... but there are no dimensions. Here are some compartmentalized cut-aways from the Fleet Boat manual... http://hnsa.org/doc/fleetsub/appendix/index.htm Plus, the Fleet Boat manual has a lot of component figures and pictures, as well. http://hnsa.org/doc/fleetsub/index.htm Quote:

Thanks guys! In my class they wanted me to do the HMS Hood. I thought they were nuts and when I checked out the details on the ship I went stark raving mad. I bribed, begged and almost kidnapped my tutor but she eventually relented and said it was ok to do a sub.

Yes, the Type II looks good in fact there's enough views and cross-sections to get me started. In 3DS MAX I can use them to get a more or less accurate shape of the hull and use the actual dimenisons of the real Type II to get the model's dimensions. Hope I get this right. It's going to be high-poly. I'm used to modeling 3D aircraft. Time to dive into the sea.

I think tha the Typ II is a good sized object for your project, too. Not too big or complicated.

Wow, great stuff there. Type II is it then. I have two projects- 1) High polygon model which will be for static display and 2) for an animated piece which will mean I may have to do a second model with less polygons so as not to take forever redering each frame. Rendering the 'skin' for the model is my favorite part. Photoshop will come in handy as well as Adobe Illustrator. I have three sections to complete- 1) Modeling, 2) Redering and 3) Animation. I already completed an ocean scene animation, just to incorporate the sub into it. Hope I get the physics part correct in the animation such as sub motion relative to sea movement. This project was supposed to be my pet project but decided to have it as my class project. Glad I don't have to tackle the HMS Hood. Man, the details on that ship is something else. maybe when I get good enough I'll tackle it.
