Default Tracked down & killed by asw trawler june, 40?

I was shelling a passenger/cargo with my aa gun (type iid) not too far from southend when i was attacked by an asw trawler. I was able to finish off the target before the trawler hit me. I immediately dove (i was only in 20m water) to 15m and made several course changes.

Within 20 minutes i was disabled on the bottom & 3 passes after that i was dead.

I didn't go to silent running until 10-12 minutes into it because i'd always heard they had no sonar...

Apparently that's not true. Bummed because i had just gotten my orders to Lorient where i was soon to get into my first type IX.

Now i have to start all over... Grrrr.

Should have broken off from your target and made like a hole in the water as quickly as possible.

Many kaleuns make the mistake of not wanting to let a target get away, especially if they've already scored hits.

You get greedy, you die.

There are 2 types of sonar.

Trawler probably has a hydrophone, but can't ping you for range.

But running in 20 meters of water without silent running. My grandpa could hear that

Running in 20 meters of water without switching to silent running?
Surprised the ASW Trawler crew didn't laugh themselves to death!

Heck they could hit you with rocks!

Idiotic mental error. I thought they had no sonar so i figured it didn't matter. I was fond of that crew too.

Yeah, suicidal. Trawlers are evil they don't look like a threat but they can knock you out of the game quite easily. So damned small too its hard to hit them with a panic spread of fish. They take a hell of a beating too, a bit too much if I must be honest. I tackled one on the surface with my gun. I knocked about 20 shells into that powered bathtub and it still didn't go down. In RL the crew would have been shredded from all that shrapnel and it would be on fire, no such thing in SHIII of course so I got the instant death screen and that was that!

Yup, no sonar doesn't mean no hydrophone or acoustic equipment at all. They won't actively ping, but they will passively follow underwater sounds and track you.
My own rule of thumb: Whatever ASW ship around means silent running until DC's are dropped or ship is evaded.

Been there, done that

2nd lesson learned the hard way: If they are not in position or equipped to harm you, they'll call their older brothers and cousins to kick your tin can if any are available around.

Better luck next time

I too have had bad encounters with the ASW trawler, and now avoid them at all costs.

The problems with the ASW Trawlers takeing damage is fixed.
Not the patch mind you.
It's been totally reworked for 2.1
Still deadly as ever but you can take it out now without all
the sillyness.
