Awesome story.
This subjects comes up on occasion, and this story is a useful example of the difference between a poor strategic vsision of ASW (that the IJN certainly had), and thier capabilty on the battlefield. The IJN certainly had an abysmal overall stragetgy regarding ASW, but the individual units prosecuting subs could be quite effective. This really shows the one glaring problem still with SH4. We cannot set a max depth for our DCs. The US boats could operate beneath DCs often times, but that is not at all the same as being invulnerable. The sub needs to come up at some point, and the escorts can stay up there til they decide not to. |

My Balao got hit with a few good strings, the boat was roacking back and forth but only my decoy luancher was damaged. before i got to depth i fired off a cutie, she circled me a bit but was too shallow and after killing engines the Cutie went off on the hunt, connecting with a destroyer. after that i was able to get to 350 feet and the rattled destroyers went away.

ive read this book several times. its like a book of short stories co existing with his story but not directly, and its an excellent read. excellent "visual writing" in this one. movies could be scripted to most if not all chapters. i may have to pull this one off the shelf for this weekend.

Even after reading such a detailed account of such an attack, it's only a taste of what it was to experience it firsthand!
I found it interesting that the Japanese method of "ringing" the sub with escorts, is very similar to the methods employed by the famous U Boat killer, Cmdr. Walker. I just saw a documentary on the History International channel the other day on the Battle Of The Atlantic. It describes how Walkers own ship would be the one to maintain Sonar contact, and the rest would form a ring around the unlucky U Boat. It stated that once caught in the ring, a U Boat rarely survived. This statement was augmented by the interviewed former U Boat Cmdr. who's sub was caught in Walker's ring, and forced to surface after a lengthy battle. |
