Essentially what you did was use your renoun to "pre-pay" for the surface radar. It's one way of guarenteeing when it does get released, there is no chance you might now have enough renoun to pay for it while in port. Being in port at or after release time will allow you to install it.

SD Radar is air detection radar - detects airplanes. It is always on. It
doesn't have a radar screen. SJ Radar is Surface Search Radar - detects ships. You have to turn on everytime you surface. It has both the PPI and A-Scope. Generally becomes available in the middle of 1942.

Ahh, I was wondering about that myself.
![]() Question: What is the difference between the A-scope and the PPI?

PPI stands for Plan Position Indicator (if I remember correctly, anyway). This is the familiar radar display. It shows a top-down view with the transmitter in the center. You'll see the line of current bearing on the display, sweeping around, and any returns show up as dots on the screen. Distance between you and the dots is representative of the distance between your boat and the contact.

I got my SJ surface radar on my porpoise and later on my gato in July 1942. Had enough renown points to get that and the improved SD Radar. I heard there's a SJ-1 Radar later on.

SJ-1 becomes available on the Balao class somewhere between mid-late 1943. It changes the radar antenna head on the sub.
