Good point.

I first read the book just last year; have never seen the movie.

If you can find it, a very good read is his actual memoirs, Monsarrat at Sea. During the war he actually published short stories about the war as seen first hand, plus some more fiction and more about the war looking back from thirty years later.

A very good book.

Wow, that was some decision he had to make. Personally, I would have stopped for the men in the water. I would take my chances and I suspect the rest of the crew would have as well.
