YES! Many people have claimed this to be a bug. But it's what German Auxillary Cruiser Raiders did. It was their tactic.

For example, the Kormoran was flying a Dutch flag when she met the Sydney. The Michel sailed under numerous flags, including Norwegian and British.

Thor...Yugoslav, British

Pinguin...Greek

Komet...Soviet, Japanese

etc etc etc

It's just a pity that the flag can't be chosen randomly. Although, for an extra challenge, change it to the British flag. That'll keep US skippers on their toes...

Yes, it can be chosen randomly, using the multi-skin feature of SH4. Go to /roster/German/Sea and look for GeAuxCruiser. In that file you can set up the game to tell it which skins to load for the ship in question. Most of the merchants and many of the warships in the game have this feature by default. I now have a mod for RFB which adds a number of different flags for the German auxiliary cruiser.

BTW, in regards to Thor: in what waters did she fly the Yugoslavian flag?

So the flag is part of the skin in SH4? That's different to SH3.

Cool then.

During patrol 1 - Atlantic/South Atlantic. She changed her identity a number of times, even Greek at one stage (near the end of the patrol, some 300 days later).

Thor started Patrol 2 as British, but by the time she hit the Indian Ocean, I am not sure what nationality she was posing as.

Yep, it's part of the regular texture file for the skin.

Thanks! I have the ship set up to fly the Greek, German, Japanese, Portuguese, Spanish, Dutch, and French flags. I didn't add the Norwegian or Soviet flags, because I couldn't find any instance of them being flown in the Indian Ocean. Are there any other flags they were known to fly in that area of the world?

You can't go wrong with those ones (although TMK the Japanese flag was dropped after Japan entered the war, or used very sparingly). Don't forget the British flag though - von Ruckteschell’s (Michel) tactic was to attack and then return later under the guise of a friendly ship aiming to aid the rescue effort. He'd then get close enough and attack whatever other rescue ship was in the area. Prolly not relevant if you are just interested in the Thor though.

Re the Norwegian flag, there's evidence of the British misidentifying the Pinguin as a Norwegian merchant. As the story goes, the Pinguin was sunk soon after because no-one waved to the British pilot as he flew past. Doesn't mean that Pinguin was definately disguised as Norwegian, but the pilot thought so...

Which, I guess, raises another point. Any chance of adding a "disguise party" to the ship? Some men dressed as women and other "civilian" looking people. That was part of the fooling too. Certainly if the ship currently has any German looking crew they should be "disguised".

Ah yes, I forgot about the British flag. I made one for that texture set as well.

In regards to crew on deck, one could always trade out some of the sailor nodes for civilian ones.
