Yeah, once you weaken it gets worse. I have been at 36% hull damage and ordered a crash dive that literally crashed me. All the way into the black.
That's unmodded, of course. I think "Die Slower" (sorry if I mispronounced the mod name) allows you to have a few visual/audio cues before you actually crush.
