You know what, I just realized I should have known this. A subvet I talked to over the summer from WWII said that his sub was docked there once and that he and his crew mates were driving aorund the island, and found some beer out in the open so they took it. As they were driving back a Japanese sniper opened fire on them so they just started shooting back. That night they baried the beer in the sand (to keep it cool) tehn in the morning gave some to the capt. and they said dont ask where we got it from. This man was very nice and funny, he passed away last fall.

There was another major shift of a US submarine base forward during the war. The Brisbane repair base was moved north to Subic Bay in the Phillipines in 1945. Most of the crews weren't too happy about moving from Australia to humid, unhealthy and desloate Subic Bay but it sure shortened the trip to Japan. By 1945 Brisbane was far behind the front lines.
