I saw a pic, a real nice one of a Japanese sub with aircraft launch, but it was not the 1-17. There is a picture of one somewhere with the caption explaining the sailors were destroying the aircraft before surrender.

It's a scale model, hard to see what way the plane launches from there.

Looks Forward Launched.
All of the B-1 class have a forward hanger, except for the I-17, which is aft.
This was the most numerous class of Japanese submarines. These boats were fast, long-ranged, and carried a seaplane, which could be launched on a forward catapult. However, I-17 carried the catapult aft, and her hangar opened aft as well.

Someone should tell the guy making those models then ^^
Plus, the number on the conning tower was different anyway.
