Default NSM4 and DJFL

Last night I installed NSM4 and wondered why a single torp could split a Large Modern Composite Freighter in two. Is this possible? I don't know the physics of sinking so maybe some Professor here can fill me in. I sent 3 torps on one almost 90 degs to my bow and he went down.
