I have seen some very impressive work done here, I salute you all!
So many new things to tweak, so little time. One thing I have noticed is captains wanting just an extra torp or two, well I was able to make my own sub, a Balao in '41 with all the bells and whistles and managed to add two extra fish in the bow and aft storages. Every post I have read regarding this says it crashes when the head to sea after changing the bunker volume in there saved game folder. I changed the volume in the game folder NSS_Balao.upc I have tried different amounts but adding only two extra works! -here is a couple of pics in port and out to sea- ![]() ![]() |

One fantacy mod that I would love to try is a sub battleship!
why not see if you can attach a battleship file to a sub, sure a guy will only be able to fire a 5" pellet gun and let the AI run the big ones. Would that be a wake up for 'ol Yamato to see pop up in Tokyo bay or what! Any ideas on where to start? |

This could make the Tench class a viable unit then, by the looks of it. They carried a few more fish, didn't they?
Clone a Balao, give 'er some extra fish, add it to the flotilla files etc, and away ya go! |

tench huh?
some history Tench class submarines were an evolutionary improvement over the Gato and Balao classes, only about 35 to 40 tons larger, but more strongly built and with a slightly improved internal layout. Further improvements were made beginning with SS-435, which are sometimes referred to as Corsair class. Initial plans called for 146 to be built, but 115 were cancelled in 1944 and 1945 when it became apparent that they would not be needed to defeat Japan. The remaining 31 were commissioned between October 1944 (Tench) and February 1951 (Grenadier). some specs Displacement: 1570 tons surfaced, 2428 tons (except SS.417-424 2416 & SS.475-515 2414) submerged Length: 307 ft (93.6 m) waterline, 311 ft 9 in (95 m) overall Beam: 27 ft 9 in (8.2 m) Draft: 15 ft 3 in (4.6 m) Test Depth: 400 ft (122 m) Speed: 20.25 knots (37.5 km/h) surfaced, 8.75 knots (16 km/h) submerged Armament: •10 x 21 in (533 mm) torpedo tubes (6 forward, 4 aft, 24 torpedoes) • 1 × 5 in (127 mm) deck gun • 2 x 40 mm cannon Crew: 80-90 officers and men Powerplant: •4 x 1350 hp (1 MW) diesel engines (10cyl Fairbanks-Morse 38D-1/8 (16cyl General Motors278A in SS.435-474) •2 x 1370 hp (1020 kW) electric motors (General Electric in SS.417-424, 435-474; Elliott Motor in SS.425-434, 475-520; Westinghousein SS.521-550) (two 126-cell Exide main storage batteries) except SS.424, 475, 476, 478, 480-483, 485, & 488 Gould • two shafts Range: •12,000 nm at 10 knots (22,200 km at 18.5 km/h) surfaced; •100 nm at 3 knots (185 km at 5.6 km/h) (maximum) submerged Submerged Endurance: 48 hours I found this but I think the endurance is weak and 24 fish in these specs too bad. anyone have some more history on these? I might just try and make one Sockeye! but add two more fish for luck Last edited by mgd; 01-31-08 at 08:55 PM. |

Was just checking to make sure my memory was actually serving me right when saying that Tench carried some more fish, and I see that most sites say that only 24 fish were carried. However, here's a couple resources that atleast confirm a larger storage capacity:
"Dust on the Sea" by Edward Beech. It is of course a novel, but Beech knows his business. I'll have to look through the novel to get the exact quote, but I'm positive that extra room was made to accomodate either 26 or 28 torpedoes. http://www.usstrutta.com/index_files/Page561.htm which states in paragraph 7: "Armament consisted of 6 bow and 4 stern 21-inch torpedo tubes. The maximum torpedo load was twenty-eight Mark 14 Mod, 3A torpedoes. In place of torpedoes, a maximum of 40 mines could be carried. One 5-inch / 25-caliber dual-purpose deck gun was fitted. Anti-aircraft guns consisted of one 40-mm, one 20-mm, and two .50-caliber machine guns." http://www.bharat-rakshak.com/MONITO...4-2/harry.html "In 1963,the US Government approved the transfer of a Tench class submarine, the USS Diablo to the Pakistan Navy on a four-year lease. After an extensive overhaul and conversion to "Fleet Snorkel" configuration, the transfer took place on 1 June 1964.The submarine was renamed "PNS Ghazi"(SS 479) and arrived in Karachi in September 1964.The Ghazi carried 28 21 inch torpedoes and had an incredible range of 11000 miles which meant that she could stay at sea for more than a month at a stretch. With the Ghazi, the Pakistan navy enjoyed a clear advantage over the Indian Navy, which did not operate submarines as yet." |

@ mgd: nice work; but it's Tench, not Trench. No 'r'.

for example if you want to increase reserve capacity for a Balao
C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Silent Hunter 4 Wolves of the Pacific\Data\Submarine\NSS_Balao [UserPlayerUnit 1.Compartment 1.Bunker 1] ; Stern Torpedo Room ID=SternTorpedoRoom Capacity=6<---was 4 IDLinkAmmunitionIntervalDefault1= NULL, 1943-12-31, Mk14Torpedo, 6<---was 4 IDLinkAmmunitionIntervalDefault2= 1944-01-01, 1944-06-31, Mk14Torpedo, 3, Mk18Torpedo, 3<---was 1 IDLinkAmmunitionIntervalDefault3= 1944-07-01, 1944-12-31, Mk14Torpedo, 2, Mk18Torpedo, 4<---was 2 IDLinkAmmunitionIntervalDefault4= 1945-01-01, NULL, Mk14Torpedo, 1, Mk18Torpedo, 4<---was 2, Mk27Torpedo, 1 [UserPlayerUnit 1.Compartment 5.Bunker 1] ; Forward Torpedo Room ID=BowTorpedoRoom Capacity=12<---was 10 IDLinkAmmunitionIntervalDefault1= NULL, 1943-12-31, Mk14Torpedo, 12<---was 10 IDLinkAmmunitionIntervalDefault2= 1944-01-01, 1944-06-31, Mk14Torpedo, 3, Mk18Torpedo, 4, Mk23Torpedo, 5<---was 3 IDLinkAmmunitionIntervalDefault3= 1944-07-01, 1944-12-31, Mk14Torpedo, 5, Mk18Torpedo, 4, Mk23Torpedo, 3<---was 1 IDLinkAmmunitionIntervalDefault4= 1945-01-01, NULL, Mk14Torpedo, 4, Mk18Torpedo, 8<---was 6 Start a career, pick a Balao and your off! But Now I have 1.4 patch and this is working for me. I can add one or two torpedoes in the bow and aft reserves and it allows me to go on patrol any more extra and it crashes and it will show you as many as you want in port, like here. ![]() So I set it back to two and started a game and np, sink some ships and head back to port. Problem now it won't let me refit. Well go into saved game file and restart my career in 1941 with a Balao and with all the late war updates. Now I can start a career with a Balao with everything including 2 extra torps and able to do a very nice 20 patrols. Now everytime I pick a Balao I get my extra fish and be able to refit, no questions asked! I have been getting e-mails saying it is not working for ppl. I do not know what the position of the moon was in to allow me to do this, but it has to be working for someone else? I can not be the only person to get this. If there is another member that can be more clear please help us out. |
