nope.. a Caucasian Sheperd

The Caucasian Shepherd Dog is a breed of dog that is popular in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Russia, and other countries where shepherds need strong protection for their flocks and properties.

Cute puppy. I wouldn't get near the grown up though. Jesus! The second photo...That thing could chew you up in a before you would even know what happened.

Probably good guard dog though.

Take note in the pictures the dog is being trained to attack on command. This behavior is not inherent to the dogs nature. It is a taught reaction to voice command. Do not get me wrong, some breeds are more receptive to behavior changes, one being aggressive. I bet he is a big old teddy bear until told to attack. Now, these pictures show the dog to be trained in attacking humans. I suspect this one is not to protect flocks from other predaters unless of course he needs to protect the flock from would be thieves on two legs.

I assume there is a simple reason why this dog race is what it is: they still have wolves in South-East Europe, and Russia, and the country there is big, and wild.

Not that I have anything against wolves. Right the opposite, I love them, and find them most fascinating. Was able to "deal" with them a bit only twice, as a schoolboy - during summer holidays, inside a wildlife reservation in Bavaria. But only once they came close to me. One of the keeper was the busband of an old girlfriend of my mom, so I was lucky to have had that experience with no fence between them and me.

I was in orbit for the rest of the week

Today I hate to see wolves in cages or inside fenced compounds. and I love them to have returned in small numbers to some eastgerman areas. If I will ever stumble over a crazy hysteric hunter trying to shoot them to save our children from getting eaten, or getting a trophy or such nonsens, he will learn about the unfriendly side of my character in no time.

Wow, reminds me of teh new russians in Moscow buying guard dogs, not feding them and then getting mauled when they get home beacuse their dog is hungry and pissed off. Wouldn't want to be on the wrong side of that thing.

Yea, the other name for this breed in Russia is "Volkodav" (Wolf-crusher) - quite lives up to that

From Wiki - "The dog develops a strong bond with its owner but will rarely be completely submissive and blindly follow orders, for this is truly a thinking dog which relies primarily on its own instincts, sometimes even disregarding its master's directions in certain situations."

Yup, that's exactly the issue with these dogs. They are extremely temperamental and conscious of their own dominance. They're not blindly aggressive dogs, unless they're abused or trained to attack people, but they are extremely dangerous if you don't watch your step with them and respect their authority, so to speak. Wouldn't be much of an issue if they were the size of a chihuahua or dachshund, but well, you see the size there...

Lots of horror stories coming out of Russia about them. They even eclipse pitbulls in press notoriety there!

Yep. Absolutely the worst thing a dog owner can do.

The words rabies and Cujo came to mind when I saw those images.

I bet you that the guy with his arm in the dogs mouth is wearing brown underpants.
