heres a seemingly obvious question (or not)

my janes books lists the DeltaIII sub K-433
as being involved in active underwater research
with an extension plug put in of 164 ft

that would bring her overall length to approx. 689ft.
or so at a guess.

It would take two WWII fleet boats welded together to be that long ...

But like in any contest that measures how big lol

You have to measure the wideth and the depth and the gross displacement surfaced and submerged.

The real test of course comes in the ability to do her job properly ...

by far the biggest submarine yet built.

Only russian built submarine used for civil purposes is a modified yankee, it is manned by a multi national crew of scientific research, but still not as long as the typhoon.

Well thats what I wouldve thought this morning Kapitan but Janes is
usually pretty reliable as a source. further though I would never argue
the supremecy of gross tonnage and useable space in typhoon.

in this case I am speaking though specifically about length
and so far I can find niether evidence to support or disprove it.
I am intrigued to say the least.

Well, let's see, that's:

128 feet longer, about the same beam and almost 15,000 tons heavier than the 1906 battleship HMS Dreadnought;

Only 233 feet shorter than USS Iowa.




Pretty big for a boat.

Its total displacement makes up about 33,000 tons; it carries 24 ballistic missiles capable of being launched underwater. Six submarines of this kind were constructed in Severodvinsk. The sub launched today is the oldest of its kind: it is already more than twenty years old. The unique sub was a response to the US’s construction of the “Ohio” nuclear submarine with 24 ballistic missiles on board. However, the “Typhoon,” constructed at Russia’s famous design bureau Rubin under the guidance of famous designer Spassky, surpassed the “Ohio”: The “Typhoon” is still the largest submarine in the world.

Sorry to say this but the infor is wrong, surfaced the typhoon displaces 33, 600 tonnes and submerged 47,980 tonnes submerged, she carrrys just 20 missiles (SS-N-20) and they are younger than ohio they were designed to compete with ohio right from the word go. the oldest unit dmitri donskoy TK208 was launched in 1977 which makes her 31 years old.

So far after twenty four hours all I can find is this mention
on Haze Gray and Underway.

Disposals/Reserve: K-441 and K-424 stricken 1996, K-129 stricken 1995, K-433 gutted for probable conversion to a "research" (special operations) or DSRV transport submarine, but there is no evidence that this work has been carried out. 6 of the 11 units listed below are also stricken or unservicable, specific identities not known.

Still it doesnt seem authoritative.
