I don't use TM so not sure. I had an Escort Carrier in my sight. Distance under 2000m, speed 7knts and almost 90 degees to my bow. Perfect. However from experience these ships can turn on a dime. So I set my angle between 10 to 15 degrees off her bow. Torp speed medium and set for contact. 1st torp is a dud, the next three hit home. Man, those carriers could blow up! What was the sea conditions like during your attack? Maybe that could be the problem? I made a torp run in rough weather and with despair saw my torps go under a heaving Cargo ship hull.

It wasn't hurricane-force winds but I had to stay at 50 feet for the periscope to see over the crests of waves.

Today I go back to torpedo school.... I'm going to get home and DRILL over and over again on different targets until I've got it down.

How accurate is the computer at guessing speeds?

The speed calculation is only as good as your data input. ID the ship correctly. Get initial data and send to TDC. Wait about 10 seconds (over simplified here) and take the data again and send to TDC. At this point click on the little watch button and see what the attack teams says. I do this three to four times until they come up with the same kts twice. This is what I use as the speed.

I would guess that the speed is wrong. I mean 9 knots is awefully slow for an undamaged carrier, especially when they return from a battle that was lost. If I were you I would set the speed to about 15 to 18 kts and see if that makes a difference.

I found that the 'trick' with the 2 minutes 58 seconds really works nicely. Then you know what it should be. And together with the speed estimate of the plotting party (the little watch button) you should be correct.

Mind that you cannot rush your setup, it only rushes the torpedoes out of the tubes to 'somewhere in the ocean' Just like the real thing...

groetjes,

I think that my targets are too far off the bow of my boat. Ideally you want it at zero. I find that American torpedoes of this era take a while to turn once launched versus German fish.

Maybe you need a stationary target "Shooting Gallery". Try this link to a mission I uploaded to FileFront and get a shot of courage back. The install instructions are in the Readme. The mission will appear in the "Quick Mission" menu of the game. Set your Realism options to whatever you like. The mission was to compare my mod to the standard game for accuracy, but you can use it for practice.

I also have another mission with a fat juicy tanker cutting across your bow, which could help in your recovery. Try this download link:

Take these two pills, and call me in the morning.
