Okay guys.
Regarding the deck gun. The accuracy of fire if the player is manning it PERSONALLY will always be too accurate. The 'destabilisation' of the deck gun that we coded for GW/GWX will only work properly if you have YOUR CREW do the shooting for you. Doing this results in far more misses and is closer to historical accuracy in terms of ammunition expenditure. The captain of the boat did not man the gun personally anyway. The deck gun should be viewed as a SECONDARY weapon. The torpedoes are the primary weapons. The deck gun should be used to finish off immobilized ships and the like. It was only RARELY used to initiate an attack. What is unrealistic, is for the player to use the deck gun as a primary means of attack on a regular basis. IIRC without looking at the manual or other reference material... beginning in 1942 the practice of mounting deck guns on U-boats was terminated. This is reflected in GWX. If you start a career in 1943... you will have to install a deck gun or else you leave without one mounted by default. Besides, if you want to duke it out on the surface against an armed merchant in 1943... good luck to ya. You are going to get holes in your boat. Beginning in 1941 in GWX... as in real life... merchants are better armed than you are. A single hit can wreak havoc on your boat. The deck gun has been a source of CONSTANT debate since SH3 was released. If we reduce the damage potential of this weapon... then players whine about not being able to pass the deck gun tutorial. If you succeed in taking out a merchant with two shots... you have gotten LUCKY... nothing more. We do allow for small critical hit locations on the ships to remain as relates to destruction by torpedo... naturally deck guns can hit these same spots on occasion. If we were to reduce the deck gun damage potential, we would only do so roughly +\- 10-15% so as not to disrupt the damage model balance. LOL, nothing we do will be the perfect answer for everybody everywhere... or in terms of what we have to work with given the SH3 platform. The deck gun in SH3 isn't perfect... nor will it ever be. Furthermore, I have seven years real life experience as a cannon crewman and as an MLRS gunner. I have personal interest in the implimentation of the deck guns in SH3 and I'M not perfectly happy with it either! Meanwhile... back on the ranch... It isn't broken. So why would we want to fix it again. Feel free to adjust your deck gun damage the way you choose... or to instead use it in a realistic way. Gentlemen, please move forward to your next concern as this one is sorted. Last edited by Kpt. Lehmann; 01-03-08 at 04:29 AM. |

Excellent post, Kpt.!
The first time I ever manned the deck gun, it suddenly occured to me, "I'm the captain of this boat, and I'm manning the deck gun?" What I do now is to make sure that my gunners get the proper qualification, early, and get experience through sinking derelicts I've already torpedoed. Also, the occasional medal is good! Then, I make sure that both deck gunners and AAA gunners are supplemented by crewmen who have the proper qualifications, in case they are wounded or killed. It works. The GWX system functions as advertised, as far as I am concerned ...

GWX 2.0 Testing in Career Mode - game crashes
I am testing GWX 2.0 in career mode.
It crashed several times. It's April 25th, 1940. My 6th patrol is starting. I am in the Kiel harbour, moving to the Kiel Canal. See picture. Every time I get to the same location on the map my pc crashes. After every crash I tried to alter some settings: Time compression on: Crash! I restarted my computer: Crash! Time compression off: Crash! I altered the settings of my graphics card from 32 bits color quality to 16 bits. Crash! Then I altered some video settings in SH3: Texture Quality High : off Crash! Particle density: 50 Crash! I even altered course in the harbor to see if that would help :-) Crash! I was "lucky" to have saved the start of Patrol 6 just before the crash. CONCLUSION: EVERY TIME THE PC CRASHED AT EXACTLY THE SAME TIME. Weird huh? ??? : I did one last test to check if my conclusion was correct: Restarted the game. Stopped the engines. Game always starts in the control room. I never left that room. Just pressed `to stop the engines. Pressed + multiple times to activate time compression. Crash! Only temporary solution seems to be to restart a career. But then you never know when it is going to crash again right. Looks like I can kiss that career goodbye > Looking at the information above I have a strong feeling the instability is not caused by video graphics card, video drivers or other video related stuff. Some processess are going on in the computer memory, but I lack the technical knowledge to understand what exactly. But the problem must be there somewhere.

Hi Robski,
Have you tried reinstalling the game? Failing that, I suppose it could be dodgy RAM. Do you get any other apps crashing? Google for memtest86 and run that ( you burn it onto a CD and leave it running, it tests the memory for any errors). Cheers, Stephen |

Thanks mate I will try memtest86. Great idea
About SH3 installation: I have 3 versions on different locations on the hard disk. stock 1.4b GWX 1.3 GWX 2.0 To make sure I started with a clean version I erased all SH3 programs. So it should be a clean installation, first installed 1.0, then 1.4, and finally GWX 2.0. The original program 1.4 also crashes on a more or less regular basis but not as often as GWX. It's not just me actually, the other guys from our flotilla have the same problem.:hmm:

Do you have any other mods installed on top of GWX 2?
A lot of mods while they will work are not 100% compatible. |

Downloading GWX2
I'm a dialupper trying to obtain GWX2. I tried using Utorrent and Bittorrent and they seem to be working fine but both indicating that it will take 6 to 7 days to download. My download rate is showing at about 1 kb/s. I have a 56 k modem which runs at about 26.5 k/s. I have little knowledge in this area and it takes so long to search for anything. Is there any way of obtaining a DVD of the GWX2 or a better way of downloading. Any suggestions
Pensioned PS. My working knowledge of torrents is very limited. |

Have made an attempt to duplicate your career CTD and I can report that the problem did not happen to me in April 1940. However to double check I will try again and if the second test doesn't yield a fault then in all likelyhood chances are the problem is in your installation. You mention others in the flotilla are having a similar problem, if you are using a mod or different files in GWX 2 somewhere that can cause instabilities with your install. Particularly... your campaign files if they have been changed or swapped in any way. As I say will double check and get somebody to verify my results and report back, but as it stands now, it looks all clear. |

Great for all the help guys.
I can assure you we have no other mods installed. Even the mods included in GWX like 16 km visibility are all turned off. Today I have installed GWX also on a brand new notebook. I have to buy a mouse with a scroll wheel tomorrow (Can not zoom in on the F5 navigation map for example:-) but I plan to test that configuration as well tomorrow.
