i get the same performance if i set the AA to OFF or 16x! so thats impossible that the settings are being applied correctly... also, the cranes look smooth but once you take a look at them with the binocs they look like stair steps...

maybe i should try a different driver version?

eVGA 8800 GTS 640
Res 1920x1200
Drivers 169.28 beta
same results with the dec 11th offical drivers
This proabably a stupid question but are you clicking 'APPLY" bottem right when you change anything?....

Default its workin....

i changed back to the 169.21 and made the changes globally, seems to be working.

but if i zoom in on the cranes they look like blocks which bugs me still but i dont think theres getting around that. i can see the rest of the AA working though.

thanks guys.

i think i MAY have stumbled on another thing as well...

I would sometimes see the sun through my conning tower or guys on watch. also using volumetric fog they sometimes became translucent. i noticed while making all these adjustments at the sub pen in pearl, when i changed :
CONFORMANT TEXTURE CLAMP to USE OPEN GL

i no longer see through the guys or see the sun through the conning tower.

another note... about the FPS jumping so quickly it cannot be read...
if i run the game in 1920x1200 (the LCDs native res) the FPS are too jumpy to be clearly read
if i run the game in 1680x1050 the FPS is locked at 60 interior and slowly fluctuates in the 30s while in port, but is VERY smooth. it almost seems better, yet its a lower resolution?

i feel like the second resolution is easier on my eyes as well...

can you guys make sense of this?
am i losing graphical goodness by running at 1680x?

I with you on this. I just changed my conformal clamping thingie to Open (can I get arrested for that?) and will report results momentarily.

---
EDIT: Unfortunately, the Conformant Texture Clamp to OpenGL did not preven the sun from shining through the bridge crew and conning tower.
---

As to the 1680x1050 thing... I'm doing exactly the same thing. Not because of frame rate issues but because 1920x1200 makes the dials and text just too damned small for my tired old eyes... even on a 27" monitor.

okay i think im gonna stick with the lower res it looks just as good, and its more readable...

i definitely got rid of the sun shining through the conning tower and see through men with one of the adjustments i made today...

Anisotropic 8x
gamma correction off
AA override at 8x
AA transparency OFF
conformant Use OpenGL
error reporting/extension limit off
forcemip maps None
multi display single display performance
Negative LOD Allow
Quality High
Trillnear optimization on
threaded opt auto
triple buffering On
texture filtering anistopic mip filter Off
Vert Sync Use app

I see the sun through the conning tower but most times I do not see through the crews head. I will try the open GL thing.

the sun not coming through the conning tower may have been a fluke, perhaps it was just because i was in the harbor with no fog....

im on patrol right now, testing it out some more, waiting for a foggy day. the see through guys dont look half as bad as they once did as far as seeing through them.

and i havent seen the sun through the tower yet. but like i said i have a hunch its dependent on weather.

however, i do think ive seen an improvement overall with the above settings.

BTW, I made these adjustments specifically for the SH4 executable. That functionality works with the 169.28 beta drivers, whereas is seems to be broken with the 169.21 and 16.25 drivers.
I tried the 169.21 and .28 drivers and was not able to get the "program settings" functionality to work with SH4. I suppose I could just change the global settings everytime I want to play SH4 but that's a pain in the ass. I reverted to the 163.75 drivers I was using before and it worked. I don't understand this. A google search turned up nothing for me.

Sometimes computers drive me nuts (no pun intended).

Cheers,

OMS

Edit: @ ATR-42: I get the see-through men and sun through the conning tower randomly and not very often. If I restart the game it typically goes away. SH4 has always seemed like a quirky game, graphically speaking, to me.
