Nope. You go down with the ship in stock SH3. You don't get the option to swim over to the enemy and spend the war in a nice safe POW camp in Canada or Arizona.

There are many aspects of Aces of The Deep that I miss. Little things like that. The best careers, and best missions boards. How in Aces you played on one save file, and unless you made extra saves it was DID. I liked how Aces forced you to return to base. While SH3 has very good gameplay, I don't really like the presentation.

I also liked how when you abandoned ship you could either get picked up by the enemy or friendly forces, get a new u-boat, and continue your career.

Yeah...of course Aces was famous for having wolfpacks too. An item that has been consistently left out since. You really got the sense that Sierra studied the subject matter before making a game based on it. I think the memory of Aces is why many found SH2 almost a step backwards in many repects.

I guess it's budget/schedule overdue and/or marketing section decision, latter is more likely. Making a game who doesn't know the history or too much detail (to an ordinarily "gamer") can enjoy must have been a demanded goal by the publisher who pays development cost initially (thus inevitably taking conservative decision)

Then those who actually develop staff like this is usually not do the work because it is a "job" but likely with love and passion. Thus I think it is the dev team who wants to develop a really geeky game but it's not allowed. They'll try within the restriction tho.

Commercial anything (music, movies) etc is the same.. if it's not hobby and cost alot the derection is in the hand of the founder.

SH3 is maybe a rare success in the nature of game ("simulation"). It sold very well initially and that's I think mostly for casual gamers. They play as submarine shooter and for a few months, go to other game. Then because of moddability potential, "simmers" like us sticked with the game and it last so long. How many hours have you spent with SH3, for only $40-$50? A thousand hours? It's not a good "business" if you play 1000 hours for $40

But the developer can certainly take a pride.

If community like this is very active, and there are many, the business owner could see potential business chance and then the developer (representative of us)
could make him understand that people want geeky sim stuff

than a casual shooter. Well, it's gotta sale well afterwords or he wouldn't belive the voice of developer and that's the tough part tho.

I hope many simulation titles can take X-plane like business approach than traditional one. It must be much easier than 10 years ago because of the internet. (research, resources, market channell etc)

BDU tells me all the time "Be more agressive !" and I take it to heart !!! "I cheerfully skip through my boat telling all my crew how proud BDU is of them when they send messages like, "Keep up the good work !". It makes me feel that what I'm doing is making a difference out there ! My crew seems to get very sarcastic when I read those "Keep up the good work !" messages to them though. I have no idea why. Oh well *shrug*.
