Sub lookout questions

In the past, I know if I am running increased time compression, my lookouts have failed to spot PT boats. The only way I know that I ran into one is after they have opened up on me and I am already taking on damage!!!

The other day I "saw" my 1st non-German submarine while trying to hide after being detected by convoy escorts ( I was using the next unit key). The British sub was running under the water at periscope depth.

Seeing the sub got me thinking!!!

Does anyone know if my subs lookouts can spot an enemy submarine?

Can my lookouts spot a torpedo wake if an enemy sub fires at me?

Thanks

I would reckon that your lookouts have just as much chance to spot an enemy sub as the enemy does in spotting yours...and from my encounters, the enemies are not THAT great at spotting submerged subs.

Are all enemy subs always under water?

I think enemy subs only ride on the surface, but I'm not sure. Maybe you saw another german sub? Anyway, sadly, terribly and much to our chagrin, other subs can't fire torpedoes

If that's the case, then I guess the other sub was a German sub!!!!

I guess I'll just keep on looking!!!!!

Any reason why I have the PT Boat problem?

Do you have your default orders set as something else? And when you run into the ship, what is your TC at? Also, what is the status of your watch crew?

I don't have anything set for default orders. Every time a ship is spotted the game stops and goes to a screen that asks if I want to engage, dive, or do nothing.

The PT boats are the only water craft so far that my lookouts fail to spot.

What's TC?

TC = Time Compression. Values between 1 - 1024.

AHH!!! Thanks

I normally run TC at 1024 & have had no problem of ships sneaking up on me, except for those PT boats.

Ive only ever seen two enemy subs.

No.1 was docked in Lerwick.

No. 2 was in a convoy, on the surface, with tommies manning the deck guns.

Since installing GWX, I've encountered a couple of enemy subs. Each time they were escorting a convoy and each time they were submerged. I suppose that a submerged enemy sub is no threat at all, since the AI can't handle torpedo shots. He may listen a lot better than his surfaced counterparts, though. I've never tried, but it might be fun to torpedo one just to see what happens.

Likewise, but then again I'm only in mid 1940, most Brit subs are probably in Norweigan waters at the moment...

One of the single missions has a British S-Class running submerged at periscope depth and travelling at a straight and head-on course to where your U-Boat starts up. I can't recall which mission it was at this time. That S-Class was running ahead of a convoy and I had scraped hulls with it, popped my scope around & thought I hit an odd deep water sub-net at first (?) and then found it passing quietly (after much hull scraping!), to my stern.

v This screen photo is of my very first S-Class sighting and sinking from a good while ago. I was on the early years of my try at a Mediterranean campaign. (surface chase, then some deck-gun dueling, lined up a zero-angled bow torp. hit that I figure must have just nicked it in the rear, then finished with some flak gun practice, subs are small targets!)
