The Type VII:

Ah what a boat. This is the choice of an artist, not a tonnage hording bonehead. The type VIIC is a far more capable boat once upgraded.

- Medium sized U-boat. Comfy interiors, solid wood panelling, no mails, no telephones. All in all, a smart seawolf unit that's much more effective even though it does not carry all the eels a type IX does. This boat can go places where a type IX simply won't fit!

- Survivability! You can escape all the nasty ASW cheap tricks the tommy's are employing these days. It's much easier to hide your flanks due to the size of your boat. Later you can get a type VIIC/41 boat that has a much thicker pressure hull and you can go way deeper than a type IX can even dream of.

- Due to the advantage mentioned above, your tactics have precise results each time that will give you confidence.

- This boat will save your time by enabling you to escape faster and better and thus return to higher TC and onto the next encounter and victim(s) much faster.

- Your bridge is a familiar, roomy place and with a type VII you feel "at home" if you also happen to like the Das Boot movie.

Disadvantage:

- As I said, if you want more tonnage with little skill, you'll need more eels that only a type IX can provide.

- Don't even think of staying surface a moment longer when an aircraft is spotted or detected. No heavy flak and some fragility means you should avoid them at all costs, even the fat, slow moving "churchill" types.

- It's extremely small, so it's hard to spot both above and under the water.

- It's size makes it perfect for port raids I just finished sinking the Nelson in port and survived to tell the tale

- Your surface speed is slower is than the Type VII so you have to make very precise calculations to determine course to intercept.

- You begin to recognize all the names of your small crew.

Cons - the aforementioned eel capacity, smaller fuel tank, and no deck gun. Not having a deck gun is the biggest bummer for me. It really sucks when a C3 doesn't go down with one eel.

That last pro is a good point. When you sail on a Type II it really is like you are part of a close-knit family taking a vacation together. A smelly, cramped underwater vacation that you quite possibly won't return from, but I guess the basic point still stands.

i always used big boats since Silent hunter 1.

IX-B is the best choice during the happy days until late 1941.

6 torpedoes tubes ready and 15 reloads, very good for attack convoys and
very fast surfaced, i reached 19 knts in calm waters with this sub.
More fuel, or more speed at the same range.

But remember that you have to adapt your tactics, for example don´t raid ports, german submarines rarely raid ports (scapa and what more ??). And crash dive as soon you see an aircraft, because it takes a few extra seconds to dive.

In my last patrol i sneaked to the mediterranean with my iX-B boat and survive to return to the atlantic again (1941)

Later, you can change to a smaller VII or continues with a IX-B but operating far patrol grids , navigate at deck awash or get a snorkel and radar detectors as soon as possible to try to survive to 1944-45 .

Type VII is good in the later years for his size during scorts attacks and fast dive times. the torpedo load is reduced , but is not important in late years, because allied countermesures make attacks very difficult and the war is lost anyway.

if you want a little revenge buy a XXI boat in 1944.
17 knts dived , radar detectors in the snorkel and a lot of firepower, no more creep at 7 knots waiting the death.
