You don't need the sh.sdl file for the sound mods to work, so your crashes prior to v1.4 have nothing to do with that. What I suspect is, with the advent of v1.4 and the new (crew) sounds it adds, using a version of the sh.sdl for 1.3 might lead to crashes. I don't know if it also controls crew sounds though, and I haven't installed 1.4 yet, so I'm only making wild assumptions here.

ETA: Hm...I just remembered that when I was looking through the lists of files altered by v1.4, I didn't spot sh.sdl in there. Which probably means I'm wrong.

The SH.sdl only controls the sound files located in the data\sound\ directory, not the speech files that are in data\sound\speech\ .
Furthermore, as far as i know the 1.4 patch didn't touch the SH.sdl, so there should be no problem in using a sound mod that comes with an edited SH.sdl which worked well with 1.3.

A confirmation from the man who has worked with that file means a lot. You can classify everything I said about sh.sdl file incompatibility as "Total Load Of Bull Droppings"
