I agree about not trying to duke it out with armed surface ships, particularly warships with trained crews (I don't even do it with armed merchants - just not worth the risk to boat and crew), unless you've already been damaged or forced to surface by prolonged D/C attack, battery exhaustion etc. and you have no choice (that's why I always put mine aft of the sail, so I can pester/distract my pursuers while I'm fleeing at maximum speed if need be), but that's another thread ).

However, I'd hate to have to give up firing the deck gun - it's too fun :p But, I only use subs that I can outfit with a 4"/50 deck gun, because kv29 did manage to get that one type of gun destabilized so it doesn't work like some laser cannon on the Millenium Falcon or something - anybody interested in firing a more realistic deck gun should check out this thread:
