Lifted from the community manual - Renown and Realism The renown you receive for sinking enemy ships is also affected by your Realism %. You will earn more renown for playing at a higher Realism %. The formula for calculating renown (http://www.subsim.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=36293), per ship, is: base ship renown value (see below) * ( (0.75 * realism %) + 0.25 ).Therefore, At 100% realism, you will receive full renown credit for every ship that you sink and at 0% realism, you will receive 25% of the renown credit for every ship.

Wow...I am learning so much from reading this thread...and this encourages me to ramp the realism level up. Currently, I am operating at either 27% or 35%...I might try moving on up to 50%-60%...I am so worred about 'dud' torpedoes...

Im surprised by your east coast experience... how did he locate you? As a general rule on those realism settings when a destroyer is sighted or warship detected you want to slow to either ahead slow or all stop, rig for silent running by pressing the "Z" key and wait for the destroyer to leave the area. go deeper if possible. just out of curiosity - what did you do when the destroyer was detected? sounds like your situation should have been survivable - especially in stock. Loading a save would not be considered "cheap" as you put it, especially if you are still in the stages of learning to play the game really well.

i think even in stock going into those areas is pretty risky, try to follow the coast line, but stay about 80 to 100 KM off coast.
you would be likely to connect with a lone merchant steaming out of norway for the Brit coast. If you select your navigator and choose the icon for depth under keel he will report how deep the water is, try to stay out of areas where the water is shallow, trapping yourself in 30 meter waters yields no options other than to run... and if you do that the destroyer will know exactly where you are. next thing i would do is transfer to a VII as soon as possible. good luck out there... reload and try again ![]()

...i decided to leave the destroyers alone. I shoot them with electric eels (no trances) only when i have a good shooting position, otherwise i stay quiet and deep and concentrate on the convoy and then dive fast and try to sneak away.
Destroyers are dangerous, hard to hit and dont give you much renown. Use your torpedoes for merchants/tankers. Background is that i play "Dead is Dead" i.e. when i die i dont load a saved game but start a new career. This makes you act very very careful and teaches you to keep your fingers off destroyers - although i like to shoot at battleships in a convoy ![]() |

Bernard is the guy who everyone blames for every bad thing that happens on the u-boat.
did you order a crash dive only to realize your in 20 meters of water? blame bernard did you order ahead flank out of the dock only to suddenly crash into a concrete barrier? blame bernard just spend two hours of game play stalking a convoy and setting up the perfect firing position and order the shots to be fired only to realize you have already used your last torpedo three days ago??? blame bernard you get the idea. ![]()
