Had SH3 since release day and still on my first career in stock 1.4b! July 1940, mid-way through my 9th patrol. First 6 were in Type II boats, now on my third in a VIIB. I tend to take my time on patrol, especially when attacking ships. If I try to rush things with time compression then all ends up in a mess or I get into a bad position.

I'm very, very eager to try GWX - downloaded 1.03 months ago, but I want to finish my first career before I do. Seems a shame to abandon it after this long. I could do a multiple install but I'll probably abandon my original career as GWX will be so good! (Though I am a little worried my modest computer won't cope. It struggles on occasion with stock 1.4b and wave texture mods, or near harbours, for example).

I've been playing for what - over a year I think - and if "sleeping with the fishes" counts as "completed a career" then I would say easily over a dozen.

However, I've never seen 1944. I play "Dead is Dead". I don't use 100% realism - I just can't live without the map contact updates, I've never been able to do the navigation without it - but everything else is set to real. Generally I get overly aggressive and poke someone in shallow water, or I hang out too long at dawn on the surface and get popped by a plane, with rather permanent and watery results.

I'm convinced 1944 is a fiction. There is a rip in the space-time continuum and the world ends in 1943. Probably the Manhattan Project. Or Area-51.

Naturally

But on the other hand, I'd almost welcome a depth charge or two. In 2 years of playing the game on and off (in about equal measure), I've yet to hear one dropped! The clueless escorts never detected me... yet. My only experience of being depth charged was in the single missions which I tried a handful of times.

Maybe it's time I started taking more risks, so I can die and end my time with 1.4b. Mind you, my current patrol has me going to BF21, just off the tip of Cornwall. I'm one grid away, south of Ireland, and have had three DDs pass me rather closely (~2km) in the space of 2 hours. If I attack a ship in these parts I might never see patrol 10. But at least I'll see GWX at last!!

none as of yet: Jan 26 1940

i am, at the moment, getting battered off the north west coast of ireland.
i turned off the 'damage % thingy' so i cant tell how much flak my boat has taken; but i know this, i cant dive much lower than 50 mtrs; everything starts to pop. i've taken alot from the tommies including 16000 tns +
and now i guess i'm having to pay for it.

this might be the last message, so, if it is, thank you all and good luck in completing your carreers...

45 mtrs down, but not out....

Being in the U-boat service is a game of cat and mouse. In the early war you are mostly the cat. But you occasionally get to be the mouse, and its actually very enjoyable. The cat (we call him Tommy) is fat and lazy, partially blind, and after playing with you for a while, gets bored, gives up, and goes back to his nap.

Later in the war, you start spending more and more time donning the mouse ears. The cheese stinks like toe jam and the kitchen is covered in wall to wall traps. Tommy the cat has brought a bunch of lean and hungry tomcat friends with him to the party. They don't give up, they don't nap, and they work as a team. The birds, which were mere hummingbirds in 1939, have turned into great horned owls, they can see at night, and they're aggressive as hell.

It's a tough job being a mouse in 1943.

Well i didnt played the stock game much and i havent gone more than 1942 but now i GWX on 100% realism i am at mid 1942 and survived yet.Hope i will make it to the end of the war.

Btw i have been under attack near american coast by some small motor boat and with its machineguns it droped my hull integrity to 36 ! (even when i took hits of 2 dc just behind the conning tower the integrity was above 50).

Are these motor boats that dangerous ???

Submarines aren't armored; machine guns of any kind can ruin your day in a heartbeat.

Am on my first career, just completed patrol 7, still using map updates and not manual targetting (though have considered it). Obviously exterior cam is on for the screenshots, though don't use it to 'cheat' and have peeps at the enemy.

I have had many careers and they usually end on Patrol Two with my sub in a million pieces at the bottom of the ocean. Sometimes.. I end up in a million pieces on patrol three.. but that's a rarity. So.. does getting blown to bits count as completing a career ? :hmm:
