Good post! Last night was playing 11 April 1943, patrolling in a IXD down near Capetown GR19 IIRC, it was about 0400 and the weather was Overcast, light fog, wind 15m/s but no rain.

I picked up some radar signals on metox so I dropped to 25m and slowed down to 2kt.

After a couple of turns of the hydrophone I got a solid contact on a small convoy consisting of 2 large merchants, a tramp steamer and a medium merchant being escorted by a DE.

Set course on the intercept but realised that I would not make it if I stayed submerged as they were travelling at about 9kt and moving slightly away from my position.

I thought bugger it in this weather I'll be I can get close enough for a shot. Up to the surface, decks awash, set course at FLANK! Got to within 1000m of them without the DE batting an eyelid even with it's radar.

I dropped to PD and set speed to slow. Lined up one of the Large Merchies, fired off three torps at 2m depth impact pistol. Sank her and then lined up the tramp steamer and sunk her as well. The DE made an immediate about face and came sniffing around. I went to flank and dived to 160m and departed in the opposite direction without a DC being dropped and without so much as a bruise on the boat.

I've just retried this same scenario from a previous save except to attack on the surface. The only difference this time was that when I got to within 400m I went to ahead slow so that I got the paint scratched up when I got spotlighted whilst trying to crash dive after the first torp hit.

I like the GWX AI the way it is and having adjusted the way I play I'm actually finding it easier than stock in some conditions. BTW I never use the noise meter as it kinda kills the realism for me. I like to be surprised when the enemy has smoked my presence as a real Kaleun would have been.

Nice post, Fenris_Wolf. It seems very useful to me.

I fully agree with that.

Yup, '43 ain't all it's cranked up to be

Altough, if you do make a mistake and you are detected at a shallow depth the likelihood of a real wallopping is much larger than in '40.

From '44 onwards tough, things become a drag, simply because you have to submerge most of the time because of the AC cover. Not much fun farting about the North Atlantic at 2 knots, eh....
