1940, eh? Well that's good news, now I know my WaW U21 will survive atleast for that long.

I'm a Picassa and Photoshop man. I also use GIMP which is a open source editor that can handle PSD's

On GIMP I have no clue on how to make pictures look like the ones most of you guys did.

Have a play around with the filters. The main ones I use are Blur, Noise and Render. I start off in Picassa by making the image B&W or Sepia, I play around with the shadows and highlights and glow until I'm happy with the look then move into PS or GIMP where I add the border, depth of field blurring and film grain. I then add a new layer and mess with the scratches, hairs and damage effects using different brushes and brush thicknesses, turn that into an overlay layer and viola an old looking photo.

Keep at it until you come up with something that you like.

Besides the two you've already made reference to, I also use the following:

Irfanview
Gimp
Saint Paint Studio
Snagit

British tramp steamer sinks after being torpedoed by U-54.

First try using Paint.NET.
