I think there is a bug which makes it advisable not to make any alterations to the boat or crew before the very fist patrol. Or that may just be to the boat I'm not sure.

If you do take on fresh crew. Beware of taking on 'helium boy'. One of the officers I think, highly qualified but his voice is too much to put up with. I dumped him after one tour.

3Jane im afaid that Person you are talking about is Bernard and he will never leave your crew. Just deal with him or blam him for sinking hospitals if you hit the wrong key when you see one.
