Default Fire following me?

Sounds like a bad David Lynch movie...but on my latest mission, when I'm viewing the surface, either through the free cam, periscope, off the bridge or gun stations, there's a column of fire and smoke that springs up in the exact location where the boat was when I initiated the view. Submerge, it's still there. Go deep even...it's there.

The anomaly stays stationary, at the point it appeared, until I "go below" to radar, chart table, etc. When I return to topside views, it's back -- but now is wherever the boat is at that point.

Other vessels don't seem to take notice of it (thank God!)...or I just haven't seen them do so yet. As I said, it's only on this last mission, a Bismarck patrol in my Gato. Running the latest TMaru and various other mods, but I've been doing so for a couple weeks without this happening previously.

Anyone else experience this? Any fixes known?

Thanks!

I think it was a bug with a smoke mod.

I think there's been an update to it since but not sure which mod it's in. :hmm:

There was a bug in natural sinking mechanics, something to do with the zone.cfg files I think. Anyway it should be fixed now try downloading the latest one 3.3

Yes, a mod issue. Get the newer version as mrbeast suggested.

Still an issue for me, even with version 3.2 of NSM (which supposedly fixed it) and I haven't updated to 3.3 yet. No mention of it being fixed for the newer version though so I'm in no hurry, I like the mod even with this occasional bug. It should go away when you end your patrol.

Uhu, noticed this too, not a real bother though.
It seems to appear after loading a saved game.. (the same "game save" a couple of times).

I've DL-ed 3.3 but haven't installed it yet..

Go to you Zones.cfg file, go to the Uboat Items section and look if you have in example...some effect like this

Effect4=#Oil_trace, 50

May be :

EffectX=#Oil_trace, XX

Yes, it's in there... three times. But it seems to be identical to the orginal (ie, not a modification).

BTW, this issue occurs with both the 3.2 and the 3.3 version of NSM.

Mmh... if i am not wrong, it is not an original uboat item effect, those effects are not into the original file. Remember i am talking about the uboat items section, not ships sections.

If you want to have not any more them, remove them... but maintain the effect number order... the remaining effects you have must be in order with no losses.

In example... if you have 3 effects listed, and the oil trace is the # 2, if you remove it, just change the #3 as #2 to maintain order.

Thanks for the reply Redwine.

I have a folder where I copied the entire SH4 installation (patched to 1.3) before I modded anything or even ran the game. In other words, pristine. In that folder is a data\zones.cfg file. And in that file are three entries under the uboat items section with the oil_trace entries. They are:

[DieselEngineRoom]
Effect2=#Oil_trace, 20

[FltEngineRoom]
Effect2=#Oil_trace, 20

[OilLeak]
Effect1=#Oil_trace, 20

The only difference between this and the modded install is the [FltEngineRoom] entry has the effect boosted to 80 from the original 20. I'll go ahead and reduce it to the stock value and see if that fixes the problem.

Thanks again for your help.

You are right, those entries are there.

But reducing the value, you will increase the anoying effect you are attempting to fix.

80 is the damage vale at with the effect is triggered, then, if you reduce it to 20, you will have this effect early.

I can remember now, by recall, if that value was, hitpoints consumed or percent of max hitpoints... any way that i wrote abov is valid in any way.

To reduce the effect, you need to rise up the value to trigger the effect later, or to remove it at all...

Let me to know if you was successful with this...

Well, I rem'ed out all three instances of oil_trace from the zones.cfg file and the "fire following me" effect is still there.

I have a hunch that it has somehting to do with previous damage sustained. Whenever I load the saved game I hear the crew say "we're taking damage sir!", even though there was no recent attack. That is followed shortly by the fire effect if I switch to the outside view. Strangely, it's not there if I immediately go to the outside view.. I have to run a few seconds, maybe switch to map view or something, then if I go outside it's there. And while I can sail away from it (ie, it's fixed at a location on the water at the point where I first went to the outside view), if I switch to map and run a bit further, it comes back right next to me when I go outside again.

Weird. Something related to the act of initiating the external view must be triggering a "damage graphics" effect in the envirnonment around (but not on or in) my submarine.
