My question was a doubt that I had when playing the game.
My current patrol is 1943, I started in January and know I'm in my third patrol, march of that year. I have the "biscay cross" as my first radar detector and so form time to time I get the message "radar signals detect". So, with the experience of the game, I know that there is a destroyer or a warship looking for some fun or the worst case, planes, so I also know that I better dive (unless I want to see what it is and then have some trill in the game). so my question: in real life, what the commander of a U-boat did when the they detect radar signals? Also I'm discarting the event of, one have a radar detector, and the alies have a new radar that my "biscay cross" do no detect. |

By '43 most U-boat skippers were diving whenever they made any kind of contact.

For about 6-8 months in 1943-44 U-Boats were ordered to stand and fight when planes were detected. Soon BdU realised how tragically wrong this approach was and allowed the U-Boats to dive as soon as a plane was detected. Not that it did any good actually, since more and more U-Boats were destroyed by rockets, gun fire, depth charges and Fido torpedoes thrown at them by the USAF and the RAF.

By 1943, U-Boats become notoriously obsolete, Even Doenitz knew this but his pride sent more boats out on suicide missions. A patrol by this time became a survival exercise rather then a hunt. So when they would get a radar contact. They would crash dive. If they wanted to see what was on top, they would use the observation periscope very briefly.
If you have a death wish, stay surfaced when you have a surface contact. If you want to fight anyways, The best thing would be to dive and wait. And see if you could sneak in close enough to hit them with a torpedo. Though you don't add to your merchant tonnage, it might increase your survival chances.

I refuse to stay surfaced and have a shoot out with aircraft, especially as im heading near to 1943 (starting new career in nov42).
However, this tactic could change if I decide to purchase a Uberboot ![]() |
