Well ya i like the look, more fuel and fish of the IX but the VIIs manuver superbly (surface and submerged) and tend to be put under the waves. The VIIs also arent as easily detected i think. Anyway they are both fantastic and i will use each dependent on which area of the world i feel like crusing.

Normally I tend to start with a Typ II, upgrade to a Typ VII B when it becomes available in my flotilla and upgrade in late 1941 to a Typ IX so that I can be on the U.S. coast on December 7 1941. I tend to stick to the Typ IX till late 1942 or early 1943 and then switch back to a Typ VII C since it can dive and turn more quickly. The Typ IX simply is too ungainly for me for evading escorts. I simply feel safer in the Typ VII and since I tend to get damaged on a regular basis I often have to return to base before I spent all my eels. Sometimes I also stay with the Typ IX till the Typ VII C/41 is available.

OK, so I'm a bit head strong, or hard headed:hmm:, but I'm still in a type VIIB in Nov. 41. Right now my latest upgrade was the anti-sonar coating. If I can make at least one or two more patrols I'll find out if I get radar and the new sonar that is on the 2nd page of the upgrades page. You know the one, that has the timeline of availability? We'll just have to see. So far I cant see any reason for upgrading just for new conning towers because I always alarm dive when aircraft are spotted.
I'm not sure about engine upgrades. Is there such a thing as a real printable page that has all the uboat types and the availability of all upgrades(engines, sonar, radar, detectars)? |

I have played mainly with the VII's and a very little bit with the II's. Have used the bigger boats only rarely in careers.
I have kept with the VIIB as late as '42, figured by then it's been through enough and it's time for a shiny new VIIC. My latest career is still in '39, this time around I will be getting into the bigger boats as soon as I can. Anyways, here is a picture that will settle it once and for all: a race between a VIIC and an IXC! http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b3...nt/subrace.jpg |

In terms of performance the VIIB is a tad quicker and more agile, but it's also more fragile, and you can't dive as deep. The type VIIC has a little more range as well as a slightly deeper depth limit at the cost of abit of surface speed and a negligable reduction in submerged speed. You'll have more oppertunities with the VIIC since you can travel further with it.
Also ,as others correctly mentioned, You have more upgrades available with the VIIC. So while you have a quicker and more agile boat, it may cost you that extra tonnage later as it's merits quickly become irrelevant since you can't dive as deep and lacking upgrades. I myself prefer the type IX's and usually save my renown for those. More torpedoes and better a better AA arrangement. Though it's submerged performance does leave abit to be desired. It's also tougher with a much higher inventory of torpedoes. I like to take out the escorts first if I can, then pummel some ships with the 105mm deck gun. It's risky but the potential for tonnage is there with that boat. It's all a question of what your style and preferences. |

VIIc as soon as i can afford it. To me an extra 3 seconds on the surface in the VIIb could mean the difference between going back to a IIa out of Wilhelmshaven in 1939 and staying alive. Also she can go deeper...and deeper = safer.
