Default Firing solution via sonar bearing/range

How does one go about that? I had a photo recon mission in Yokohoma Harbor and on my way out (creep in creep out) I find myself in the midst of a small convoy headed by a couple of escorts and two juicy troop ships/passenger liners. Before I know it the escorts have a bead on my and they nail my periscopes. So not only am I deep in enemy water, but now sans scopes too. So I cheat a little and go topside and manuever around the escorts using this as time to experiment with sonar bearing/range only firing solutions. Can I pick my target? Ie, lay the passive sonar on the target I want and fire off an active ping? Seems the active ping only always painted the nearest target. Amazingly in this meele I did actually hit one of the escorts and he went down, though admitteldy I was "aiming" at the passenger ships so I think that was a wild-ass luck shot. Any advice will be helpful/useful.
