I'm on my third career and I have yet to see a carrier, though that's probably because I was still learning and every time I went near a task force I had DD's all over me and couldn't get a shot off. I started a new career yesterday and my third objective was to patrol the East China Sea. Surprisingly enough I didn't run into much on the way there and only managed to take out a Huge European Liner before arriving in my patrol area. About one day in I started getting a couple warship contacts from my Sonarman so I head over to check them out and the closer I get the more warship contacts I get, it was crazy. So I pop out the external camera to take a look and it's the hugest task force I've ever seen. Up until this point most reported task forces I've run into have either been a Destroyer (or two) and a Gun Boat or the one huge troop transport (I assume) passenger liner escorted by 3-4 Destroyers. This task force had 4 Battleships (no Yamoto though), 10 or so Cruisers, at least 12 Destroyers and about 4 random merchants thrown in there too. I crept up on it but still got some attention from the Destroyers, I was at 300 feet and running silent though so they had a little trouble finding me.
Popped up with a Battleship in my sights, fired off 4 torpedoes and immediately dove back down to 300 feet and went silent again. All 4 torps hit and over the next couple of hours the battleship capsized, 32,000 tons in my log! I tracked the task force down and again approached quietly, getting some attention from the Destroyers but evading them fairly easily. This time I fired off 4 torpedoes into the lead battleship and dropped to 300 feet and ran silent again, following the task force this time. Over the next few hours the ship started listing to one side and the water even came up to the deck but it never did sink. I was out of torpedoes in the front tubes but still had a few in the back so I popped up to periscope depth once all the Destroyers were well out of range and fired another torpedo into the ailing ship, making sure to aim for a spot I hadn't hit yet. The ship lowered in the water a little but still didn't go down... I gave it another hour and then fired another torpedo into her and she finally gave up the fight and went down, this one was 34,000 tons. My first ever warship kills (other than Destroyers) and they sure were nice. From now on I'll be checking out more task force contacts for sure, I'm definitely looking forward to sinking a Carrier. |
