I have a relative who served as 1st class torpedoman and gun captain during the war. He said they usually would stop and search small shipping in the Phillipines area. If carrying controband the crew would be ordered off and they would sink it. If it had a radio, it was down. If it was armed, the crew was not afforded the courtesy noted above...

The Japanese commandeered many of these small ships to run supplies from island to island...

Edit: If it was native and not carrying anything that would obviously help the Japanese, they would let it go. It seems tp me that how the situation was handled was up to the discretion of the submarine commander...

LOL I noticed this too ! In real life the shells would just zip through the sails and keep on going doing little to no damage.

Reminds me of the old joke we used to say about sailboat racing.

The starting committee will fire the starting gun down the starting line. If you have a hole in your jib you were over early :p

I have to wonder though, around the Philippines . . . would some of those be partisan controlled . . . I mean there is the story of the USS Narwal dropping off supplies in '44.

But depending on the area . . . sink 'um.

Here's a question . . . why wouldn't you run across US and British Merchant flagged vessels, flying Japanese colors in areas of occupation . . . then quickly running up friendly colors when the enemy isn't looking?

I understand it's against international law to fly false colors by combatants . . . however, what is the law regarding non-combatant vessels.

albeit excellent gunnery practise for your DG or AA, the 2tons awarded dont justifie the risk of my boat being discovered and gunned down..

Dive deep and pass em bye, the Nips can keep their smelly fish..

With Regards,

Krauter
