I´m reading a book (one of our submarines , edward young)
where a british submarine during an agent extraction fall in a ambush, with heavy machine gun fire and guns ,incoming from the shore

it makes an idea how difficult and dangerous these actions were. and more the recover, if the agents are captured by enemy.
