CONTRAST RATIO 3000:1...??? and SH4
I just bought a Samsung SyncMaster Monitor, it's a Analog/Digital 21.6" wide with a contrast of 3000:1. When it's night the moon and moon light looks really bad and the fog looks really strange as well. The sun looks good and everything else looks good. The moons light has really bad rings around it. I was wondering if it's the 3000:1 contrast. I put my old Samsung 19" with 700:1 contrast and the moon and moon light and fog looks ok again. Is there anybody else that has the 3000:1 contrast monitor with this problem...? FSx looks good with this monitor and my other games as well. Thanks for any info. My video card is a 7950 GT and the driver is 162.18 Motherboard Intel D975xBx2, CPU = intel 2 Duo 3.00 GHz.

Try to disable light beams in game options. If that helps then youre just seeing what you couldnt see with 700:1 contrast, the crossover between light and dark appears sharpened and less smoth. |

I have the Samsung 216BW, running via DVI connection off a GeForce 8500GT card. Since I'm not at home right now, I cannot recall exactly what I did, but I remember having to play with the monitor settings a bit to get it to look right for SHIV. I don't think I'm using one of the built-in calibrations - I remember playing with colour and brightness on a custom setting. Oh, and I did not install any of the Samsung colour sync software - didn't see the need to have it running in the background. Out of the box though, the monitor was not set up well - WAY too bright, contrast set too low - it takes some playing to get setup right.

Thanks for the replys. This is my Nvidia settings
Desktop Color Settings: Brightness = 46% Digital Vibrance = 17% Contrast = 37% Imaga Sharpening = 14% Gamma = 4% The Gamma is the big one for me, at 4 % in the Desktop Color Settings and also set low in SH4 the moon and fog look not to bad but still not as good as it did in my old monitor. I did uncheck the Light shaft so there is no moon light rays coming down to the water, that looked really bad with this monitor so far. In Display Properties/Settings/Advanced/Color Management and under { Color Profiles Currently Associated with this Device is: Sm223BW SRGB Color Space Profile I have tried both of these and it did not do any change that I could see. I also have uninstalled the color management program that came in a CD for this Monitor and still did not see any change for me. I am running the monitor in Analog not Digital right now but did not see any change as well. Thanks for any help on this. |

Well I have had it with this monitor and I'm sending it back. Got my old 700-1 19" Samsung back up and running and all my games and SH4 looks good again. Sure wonder why I had those problems though

Tok, sorry, I never got a chance last night to sit down at my machine and pull up my settings.
The one thing I did remember when I first got my 216BW is that I had to re-install SHIV in order to get the 1680x1050 wide screen option to show up under the screen resolution options. Prior to that, it would not show any wide screen options at all. I didn't think it did that much hardware checking/configuration during a full install, but that was the one oddity I remember when I was first setting that monitor up. Did you choose custom settings on the monitor itself? None of the Samsung presets looked right to me (especially the "games" one - that was funky to my eyes). |

Hi seafarer, yes I did get all the resolutions in SH4 setup for this monitor and gave them all a go. It's strange, at night the moon, sky, and lights and the sub in the fog all look just like a bad 2D display.

I would strongly suggest you disable Image Sharpening, or at least reduce it to the lowest possible setting you can tolerate, and consider turning it off when playing games. It adds unoriginal information to the image. Things might seem a little blurrier but that's the native picture and how it was intended to be seen.
There's also a really good DVD out there called Digital Video Essentials (and an HD version I hear now too) which helps you do professional quality calibration of your TV settings and given how the "contrast" is really a combination of your TV settings and your video card settings, it takes some work to get it right. In general I've found that the DVE disc calibrates my TV for an excellent NTSC movie quality signal, great for watching DVD movies, but that same image is a bit dark for gaming. So I have two Nvidia profiles. |

I use a 2000:1 LG 1900R... and look fine, but i was with troubles with the LG control program, i was not able to reduce the bright... the monitor burn my eyes, finally i uninstall it and i am using ATI Tray Tool now to control its bright and contrast.
Which Samsumg Model are you using with 3000:1 ? |

hi seafarer, just one thing I could see I still did not like was the sky, it still looked a little like 2D. So I turn up the gamma a little more in the nvidia setting and the contrast and then put the grain effects back on. With that setting I could hardly see the grain effects and now the sky looks just right at 1680x1050. Strange I guess but it works for me.
![]() Thanks for the info minsc_tdp, I'II look into that and I'II disable Image Sharpening. ![]() Sounds like a good monitor with the ATI Tray Tool Redwine. ![]() Thanks everyone for the info and replys. ![]() |
