Frankly I use rude gestures and curse words.

I dont typically mess around with them and often alter course just to avoid them.

I came across a group one time, and hit the "Report Sighting" button. HQ sends back a message ordering me to sink the enemy convoy. I wasn't able to accomplish the mission until later, when I ran across a real convoy.

I have a photo of a destroyer sinking one. If they think it's a good idea, you probably should too.

On the other hand, in SH1 I used to dive and avoid them...sometimes.

40s and 20s work well on them too if you get close enough.

from historical point of view: japanese have expanded along pacific very fast and they lacked of transports between islands. They used anything, even raft boats to carry war equipment from one island to another.

from game mechanical point of view: Sampans are considered hostile merchant, all of them not just a few. When youre spotted by one (it doesnt matter sampan or an 8000 tons merchant) the chance that enemy planes appear among you will be greatly increased. You will get spotted when you attack with the deckgun.

So you have two options.

1. If you are close to objective on secret mission or in shallow waters avoid them, remain hidden if you dont like finding yourself trapped.

2. If you dont care about being spotted, sink them. After all they are enemy tonnage.

BTW, in the stock game sampans are all equipped with german gun laying radar---the type on Bismark.

The fishing boats merely have regular japanese radar

LOL.

Default Sampans

Sampans have radios, look with external camera you can see antennes on the sails.
Dependes on the mission, if its to destroy ships; I sink them, if its recon just pass
them up.

You forgot one,

Some carried radios reporting submarine sightings.
Yeah you are right they have radio and when you passed them next time what you will see some aicrafts going to see you, or better - 2 destroyers so the best idea is to sink there with AA gun with AP amo to don't waste any deck gun shels and AA HE shels

The one funny thing about shooting sampans is how their sails stop deck gun rounds cold. What did they make those things out of, kevlar?

I just can't bring myself to turn my guns on them. Am I doing my country a disservice by letting them sail on by? Hey... some of them have good fish which Cookie buys off of them for a few packages of smokes! A nice tunny beats the hell outta whatever else he has in the galley after 30 days at sea.

So I'd like to know... will I ever get penalized for sinking them? Will I ever get penalized for NOT sinking them? Do my fellow skippers with more patrols under their belts turn a cold, appraising eye toward their fragile wooden hulls and blaze away? Or do you enjoy fresh fish for dinner as much as I do?

Regards,
Captain Tally
