From the historical/doctrine front I can only offer this advice:
1. Don't radio contact report before engaging. USN considered this to be a possible way to tip off the enemy. 2. Carriers called for all 10 tubes to be fired at it in the spread. My advice is to pick a valuable target and saturate it with torpedos. 3. Approach from the front flanks as best you can. The DD escorts are going to be thick as flies on a TF so it'll be tough. You might have to fire from long range outside of the DD screen. 4. Shoot and run and pray your sonar operater reports hits. |

And remember, you are in SUBmarine. If you can cripple one or two carriers, take advantage of their hull as cover from destroyers. Slink under them to put off enemies chasing you if you can.
Since knowing location of carrier is bit of difficulty you most likely get only one pass. But it can help when destroyer either has to abandon it's attack run or hit the carrier. Nothing like rudderless carriers to play hide and seek with. (this "tactic" is somewhat insane and only should be employed if you have desire to try something odd and rather unrealistic) |
