Noob Combat Advice - Engage Task Force??

Hi

I'm new to SHIV. Waiting for the 1.3 patch, and so I've only just started my career.

BTW THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU, not only to all the wonderful modders out there that have done so much work to make this game so wonderful to look at and play with, but also to those few who have taken the time to do wonderful TDC / PK video tutorials...

Ok, here's my dilema. I'm on my 3rd ever mission, out of the Asiaitic base, just doing cargo runs, when I run into a convoy.

However the convoy isn't merchants, but an entire task force of destroyers, carriers etc...

So here's my problem. All these warships, esp so early on in the war are a WONDERFUL target, but without 'wolf-packs' I'm all alone in trying to take out as many as I can.

It's night time, moderate seas, only partial sky cover but a quarter moon. I haven't been spotted...

So, what do I do?

Can I really take on the entire task force of over a dozen Japanese warships? Or do I just call it in with a report and high-tail it out of there.

It just seems a waste to run away, but they are heading right for me (they are heading for the island where I'm based, but far enough out that I can flank it...)

Should I let them pass me by and try and take out the ones at the rear?

The only problem with that is how do I get into a 90degree position? Does anyone have any success with firing fish right up a destroyers tailpipe from astern?

I've saved my game at this point, where my watch crew spotted them, and, LOL, it's been 4 days since it happened - and that's FOUR DAYS I've wasted on a game, because I just don't know what to do... LOL

Is that silly?

Thanks for any / all advice offered.

Thanks again to the modders and video tutorial makers.

i would attack, but then again that is me. i would attack the carriers first. at lesat that is what i do. i always go for battleships and carriers first if they are in the convoy. you get lots of tonnage that way. i always look for task forces instead of convoys that why my tonnage is so high. ill ignore convoys most the time and take out the task forces. recently i surfaced in middle of a task force accidently tat wasnt on map nor did my sonarman pick them up and it had two hiryu carriers and two escort carriers with it and escorted by 5 destroyers. needless to say, the carriers are history LOL i escaped the destroyers wtih minor damage, bt takes me a long time cause i will sink one ship, dive down to 250 and let the destroyers search area while task force moves on then sink two more andi f time allows before destroyers catc up i will sink another one. i odnt normally mess with the destroyers unless i have a good shot, which is rare as they are always zig zagging and going superfast.

The first thing you should do is radio in a contact report. Then manouevre your boat into the best attack position to take out the biggest targets ( carriers, or battleships ). Once you've fired, stay silent, dive and creep away. If you plot the Task Force's course you might be able to loop head for a second go

Good luck. It should be worth the risk to see a flat-top go down.

Just don't forget to duck

Default Get em!

"Call coming in from Admiral Lockwood. He wants a voice hookup, Sir"

"Son, this is the Admiral. I know you are new out there. I know all those warships look pretty intimidating, don't they? (psssst! Sounds like the Admiral might be in a good mood!) But son, you are in a warship yourself: the best damn warship 150 years of US Navy experience could put you in. As a graduate of the WernerSobe Sub Attack School, you are the best-prepared new sub skipper in history to be in the place you are right now.

"Do you believe in God, son? I believe God put you in that submarine, in that spot in the ocean with the Jap fleet in their spot in the ocean for a reason, don't you? Makes you feel just all warm and fuzzy inside doesn't it? Well that's good because you may be meeting him before the sun rises. If you get there before I do, put in a good word for me, will you? NOW GO DO YOUR DUTY!"

"Aren't you glad the admiral was in a good mood for once? Hey, you look a little white to me. How about a cup of coffee? You aren't gonna barf right here on the bridge, are you?"

give'em a salvo dive to depth and creep away, if they hit they'll be pretty bust leaving you time to escape, then call it in

From the historical/doctrine front I can only offer this advice:

1. Don't radio contact report before engaging. USN considered this to be a possible way to tip off the enemy.

2. Carriers called for all 10 tubes to be fired at it in the spread. My advice is to pick a valuable target and saturate it with torpedos.

3. Approach from the front flanks as best you can. The DD escorts are going to be thick as flies on a TF so it'll be tough. You might have to fire from long range outside of the DD screen.

4. Shoot and run and pray your sonar operater reports hits.

And remember, you are in SUBmarine. If you can cripple one or two carriers, take advantage of their hull as cover from destroyers. Slink under them to put off enemies chasing you if you can.

Since knowing location of carrier is bit of difficulty you most likely get only one pass. But it can help when destroyer either has to abandon it's attack run or hit the carrier.

Nothing like rudderless carriers to play hide and seek with.

(this "tactic" is somewhat insane and only should be employed if you have desire to try something odd and rather unrealistic)
