Verdun Memorial

War museum, we didn't have time to enter...

Battlefield covered with trees

The Jewish memorial for Verdun, actually left in peace during 1940-1944 by the Germans

The Memorial seen from the road

Close up, look through a window, human bones, very morbid to look at...

One side of the field in front of the Memorial, covered with crosses...

Inside the tower, french line in english:
This tower has been offered to the great fallen people of Verdun by their friends of USA

The chapel inside the Memorial

The Muslem memorial for Verdun - apparently some Turks may have fought for Germany at Verdun, since they were allies back then. Can any Turkish members confirm that?

Part 4 of 5, 1 to go...

Fort de Douaumont - situated just next to the Verdun Memorial

Poster showing the area of the battlefield of Verdun

Poster showing the fortress

CaptainCox, you see? My photo is made at the same angle as yours. A little funny that we were the same place this summer...

Poster at the entrance of the inside of the fortress. Sadly my group hadn't the time to enter here neither...

Outside the fortress

On top of the fortress

That's it! I hope you enjoyed watching these photos! It's a sad part of our history, but important never to forget these events!!!!

I visited the place with the trees back in 2001 and wrote this poem close to where my Great Grandfather died. I think it goes well with your photo.

I was only 14 at the time, so go easy on the criticism.

Indeed! I was impressed how well he told about these trenches and the stuff we could see, also when I asked him some questions about it...

It's okay....
Since my group consisted of a majority of girls, many pretty girls btw, the management had decided not to use too much time on war themes as necessary. So we had a conference about Verdun before going and then one day to see all this, including the bus ride around the area. But I would have liked to stop in the forest as well. Oh, well, I'm still young, I can return another day...

MAN! I SO MISSED THAT TRENCH! you show in the first post
It was just poring down the whole day when we where there, so we did not see all the stuff.

Some pics from Douaumont, The Museum and one of the many grave yards/memorials in the area of Verdun

Had a pretty crappy camera that day, so the pics are not 100%+ it was poring :p

The trenches museum is situated a few kilometres away from the Verdun memorial. If you want, I can send a e-mail to one of the teachers or supervisors of the summer school and ask for the exact location, because I don't really remember, where it was...

Yeah, we had a lot of rain in North-eastern part of France this summer, in all of Europe I think, but that day, at least while we were at the Fort, we only had very little rain, but some of the day we had lots of it. While inside the Memorial building it was raining "cats and dogs" (is this a British expression only?).
