Default dates when new bases become available

are these historically accurate because i seemd to suddenly get norwegian and 3 french ports open all in one day while on patrol.
i also got a message 3 times saying brest was new port but not visible on the chart?i also noted that southend was empty of ships when i tried to get in.where are the best ports for raiding easy targets?

Best ports for raiding easy targets ?.

I would probs say that Lock Ewe is a good bet, when i went there, the war had just only broken out, so there was only 2 trawlers guarding the port, although detached from Wilhs'ven, i had to go round the N.E coast of Scotland, just under Scapa Flow, which did get a bit worrying with the Destroyer patrols in that area – even if you do hug the coast line...but other than that once your in Lock Ewe all you need to worry about is the 2 trawlers, they aren’t that hard to tackle, and the irregular air patrols of 2 Ansons.

From personal experience i would avoid ports, which require you to navigate through shallow channels, due to that there is alot less space to manuver about resulting in the increased probability of getting picked up from patrolling units. If you do the heaven help you because you cant dive deep !!! (i.e. bases such as Bristol, and Portsmouth.

As for the big problem with Allied ports:

The placing of Sub Netting, which is a problem which ive encountered many-a-time, ideally trying to get into the ports, I don’t really remember coming across any at Lock Ewe, I can say that ive come across them at most other ports that I’ve infiltrated and the best way ive found of not getting caught up in them, is trying not to enter the port from its side, often the netting will guard the sides (as at Key West), so if you come in centrally, you should avoid them.

However sometimes you can find some ships anchored outside the actual port (landing convoys and such consisting of troop ships) if this is the case you can fire the torps over the netting (remember to set torpedo depth to at least 2m by pressing F6)- this worked for me when outside the port of Oran & Algiers.

But still even so once in the port you can find it hard to manuver round, especially when trying to gain a distance of at least 300m (so the trop will detonate on the selected target) as I found out in the port of Hartlepool.

Getting past the patrols:
I have often found that if I submerge about 10-15 km from the port (without getting spotted) and setting the ‘rig for silent running’ command you can most likely get there without getting picked up.

Heres a basic summary of the good ports that ive been to and the bad:

GOOD:
Lock Ewe (North WestScotland)
Oran (West Med, N Africa)
Algiers (West Med, N Africa)
Key West (East coast U.S)

BAD:
(Shallow Channel with Patrols)
Liverpool
Bristol
Southend on Sea
Scapa Flow

(Heavy DD and Air patrols)
New York

(WARNING MINES!!)
Dunkirk -early stage of war

Do note that as the war continues, you will find it increasingly hard to raid allied ports due to the increased air cover, and techn’cal advancements of the patrol units, so the best time is probably from the start of the war though to about late 1943.

Gibralter - deep water >300m and lots of fat tankers!

And if your in the baltic in jul' 41 take a trip to the soviet port across from Helsinki,
it was only gaurded by little sub chasers which are delt easily enough by the deck gun,
I got over 100k tonnes plus the Finnish are nearly always bombing the port.......
