Default cant re-install or uninstall

well i wanted to reinstall sh3 again, however last time i uninstalled it it wouldnt get rid off all of the game and it left a symbol in my add/remove programs. when i try to get rid of it i get this message...... error reading from c:\windows\installer\silent hunter III.msi then it says "rolling back action" then i get another message saying "a fatal error occured consult windows installer helper" until i get rid of this it will not even let me play vanilla sh3, it lets me install but when i come to play it says there is some sort of kernal error.
i have tried deleting all the files i can find, deleting all the reg keys etc etc so does anyone have any ideas please
thanks in advance.

Deleting SH3 in My Documents and from your Main SH3 Folder should do the trick. Sounds like you have done that.

There should be an error code like "Error code 1603". Try it again and then put the details into Google for loads of results.

This is not directly related to SH3 but rather Windows intergrated installer package.

You might even be able to clear it with a Windows Repair package, like Tune Up etc, try Google first.

You will also have to remove it from the registry, remove anything with SH3 or Ubisoft, then you should be able to re-install it.

Whack the DVD in the drive
Hit install then repair

If SH3 is still on there it will replace the deleted my programs folder

Then try uninstalling

Part #1:

1.) Do an uninstall of SH3. When the uninstall is complete, go into your control panel and verify that all files and folders have been removed from your C:/Programs/Ubisoft/SH3 area. Delete manually anything that may remain. Also make certain that any installed mods aren't auto-loaded upon bootup, such as SH Commander, which loads as soon as you run Silent Hunter.

2.) From the control panel, go to your My Documents and Folders folder, look for SH3 and delete any and all files remaining there.

3.) Click on RUN, type in REGEDIT and hit ENTER.
Scroll to HKEY_CURRENT_USER, highlight and expand the tree, scroll down to SOFTWARE, highlight and expand the tree again, scroll down to UBISOFT, expand the tree and scroll down to SILENT HUNTER III, scroll down to KEYS and highlight it. Now, on the right hand side, you should see two items, one is 'default', and the other should be called DiscKey_SH3...and to the right of that one should be your 25 character DVD code. Delete that entire line.

4.) Back up and find HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, and once again, scroll down to SOFTWARE, scroll down to UBISOFT and delete the entry.

5.) Delete the desktop icon/shortcut. Since this points to an old install, that pointer should no longer exist.

At this point, you SHOULD have all pointers to the original game installation(S) removed. NOW try a complete, fresh, clean install of SH3! DO NOT ADD MODS!

6.) Once the game is reinstalled, you should then be able to install the 1.4b patch. One thing here...make certain that you have the correct patch for your game, since there are four separate patches:
a.) On DVD bought in the U.S.
b.) On DVD bought in Europe (EMEA).
c.) Downloaded version for Europe (EMEA).
d.) Downloaded version for U.S.

Part #2:
As far as the entry that refuses to go away in your ADD/REMOVE software:
1.) Go to RUN, type in REGEDIT and hit ENTER
2.) Go to HKEY_Local_Machine/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Uninstall
3.) Scroll down to locate the Silent Hunter entry, delete the listing for Silent Hunter and EXIT.
The entry in ADD/REMOVE should now be history.

Had the same problem... only I solved it by selecting modify in the install shield thingy. After that I could uninstall it normally. and then reinstall it w/o probs

thanks reallydedpoet.
heres is how i solved it.......

about 10 months ago i uninstalled sh3 and gwx and all that went with it. it left me with a little icon in add/remove programs (pc and a disc symbol) and it eould not go away.

all you do is put the sh3 disc in and click repair.
now once its repaired you need to re-instert the sh3 disc in the drive, you should have all options i,e play, uninstall etc
you need to click un-install from the disc menu and not the add/remove program menu. this will get shut of the probs i had hope this helps

I had to remove the SH3 key from my InstallShield folder after I cleaned my registry and manually removed every trace of SH3 from my hard drive to get it to reinstall. After that, I got smart and kept a clean copy of SH3, patched and with GWX installed, of course, on my hard drive to copy into the Ubisoft folder when I need it.
