Default Task forces

I've gotten messages about task force sightings, but I've yet to engage one. Being curious about what's in a task force, I did a search of the site.

It looks like most of them consist of major warships (carriers, battleships, etc.) and their escorts. I presume that these are the kinds of task forces that are reported as moving "fast."

Yesterday, I got a message about a "slow" task force heading east from the Gulf of St. Lawrence. What kinds of ships are likely to be found in a "slow" task force?

Usually a task force has warships in them.

Ive seen two types.

One with warships, from carriers, battleships, cruisers (light), and destroyers.

And one that i have seen on the med that has merchants and destroyers. It called it a Task Force...so go figure.

BTW im a gwx user...if that makes a difference to you.

A slow TF might well be a Hunter Killer group :hmm: keep clear of them, you'll often find them ahead of or following a convoy. Always on hand to come to their aid if need be

A convoy with a warship as lead ship (first row, not escort) will also show up as taskforce IIRC

What's in a task force? Holy open ended question.

Anything incuding what's been mentioned, and depending on the operation you could have aux cruisers mixed in. Durring the norway Operations it was a few DD's together to light and heavy cruisers. Anything with a carrier in it was usually farther off the coast or north.

if you want to know whats in it. engage it.
if you are insane (like me) you take them out on the surface,
if you are certain of victory then take them out at periscope deapth,
and if you are like most of the ppl here you turn your boat and get the hell out of there

I got a Task Force lately, somewhere in the vicinity of the Bismarck sinking, only 1 day it was sunk, it had a battleship and a carrier in it.
I managed to sink the carrier, but had to let the BB go because the escorts drove me deep.

Thanks for all the responses.

I finally caught up with that slow task force, and it turned out to be several merchant ships, with destroyer and corvette escorts. Rather anti-climactic.

The only difference I could see between this "task force" and the "convoys" I've encountered is that two Flower corvettes were sailing together, many kilometres astern of the rest of the ships in the "task force."

How can you mod SH3 so that when a task force is close by you get a radio message, just like with convoys?

A slow task force can mean a number of things. You might just be encountering a group of tankers and cargo ships and DD's, or you might be encountering a group of warships just moving at a slow pace, possibly with a carrier in the group or a battleship (hence the slow speed). Your best bet would be to work your way closer and dive to about 30 meters. Then, listen in with the hydrophones for a report on their screws. Depending on your crew experience and morale, you'll get a reading, but not always correct, mind you. Consider running at "Standard" speed and going to periscope depth, but keep a low profile (meaning, reduce your speed DRAMATICALLY). If it's a group of warships, best back off, but sink maybe 1 or 2 OR just damage as many as you can. Only use about 4 torpedoes on the entire group. Then move on and sink some merchants (in the case of warships; in the case of a merchant task force, you know what to do... ).
