I've had battery damage such that it wouldn't charge more than 95/100. Thus it would never switch off "recharging mode" thus the fuel economy suffered.

An interesting side study might be to look at how many real subs ran out of fuel, and what the outcome was.

In the meantime, the lesson is: Don't leave the computer when you're at high TC. In SH3 I had more than one occassion when I saved myself at the last minute by dropping to slow speed; but that only works if you're paying attention.

Or maybe they need to include a 'Chief' patch: It drops to 1x and the COB says "Skipper, I'm worried about the fuel situation. Here's my recommendation..."

You can switch it off manually.

Only if you notice it 95/100 looks so close to 100/100 graphically that you may not notice until it's too too late. Now that I know I'll be on the look out for it. By the way, my Porpoise class sub gets max range at 8kts (1/3rd of that at 10kts). Now I have a Gato offer from Pearl... do I dare risk the early retirement bug?

How do you see what they're offering you?
I've never seen this.
Wasn't the retirement with the Balao?

When putting into port 'ending patrol' it (the offer of a new sub) comes up as a splash screen. You cant miss it trust me.

I know that, but I have never seen what sub they offer me. They will offer me a new sub, than I accept, get beamed up to the office, go to the weapon screen and there, for the first time, I see what sub they gave me. I never know in advance.

If you really want to save that game-you could just go to the saved game file in my docs and edit the cfg file to read "unlimited fuel" TRUE.

Then change it back again when you're in port.

I know it's a cheat-but sometimes when you're going to lose a good career-for something stupid-it's time to cheat!

You're just not going to get good fuel efficiency at 2/3, not even in SH3. It's way too fast.

Stock game has fuel efficiency at 10knots for fleet boats. Cruise at 9 knots for max range.

TM 1.4 (mod pack) sets fuel efficiency to 10.95knots (so you can set a historically accuracte 10knots cruising speed to achieve max range).

I only know because I accepted the offer. Just like you I had no clue what kind of clown car they were going to stick me with. What I did notice was immediately upon entering the base I could get all sorts of goodie upgrades like the Imp. SD and SJ-1. Unfortunately after saving an dloading the "UponEnteringBase" save those goodies all disappeared.
