Default Fuel efficient routes

Hi,

Does SH4 model the earth's curvature so you can do a sort of parabolic route to get to Japan from Hawaii?
I run at 9-12kts (which sould be the most efficient speed for a Gato) and by the time I get to Japan, I need to get back.
Last time I left with more than half the fuel but I found a couple of ships, so with the manouvering and all that I didn't have enough fuel left to get to Midway to refuel!

Thanks.

Default Interesting question

wow I hadn't really thought of that. If the Devs did factor the surface of a sphere into the fuel consumption calcs I owe them a new level of respect

Run at 10 knots, not 11 or 12. The S class runs best at 7 knots.
The devs made the earth a flat place, so the shortest route from A to B is .................

I know this was WWII, but a flat earth?

I'll try a run at 10kts and see if I can get back home alive.

The SH4 is flat as a shorty stack.

No great circle routes needed here.

Yes, from Pearl to Japan I alwasy top off at Midway. This was SOP for the Hawaii boats, and one of the values of holding onto Midway Island.

I try to kepe track of how much fuel I expend as a percentage to get from Midway to station. That way I know when I'll go Bingo and have to head back.

I did refuel at Midway, but it the range was still too short.
I've just done another run at 10kts with the Trigger Maru mod and I got to Japan with a lot of fuel left. I suspect part of this is from the mod and part from the speed.

Thanks to all that answered.

Which mod?

You should probably download the keyboard editor or something, and get the "range at current speed" key setup. In a Gato crusing at 2/3's, you should be getting almost 20,000km range.

The total range on diesel at 9kts seems to be just over double what it takes to go to to Japan and return to Midway.

It seems the trick is to go submerged as much as possible and resurface in the night to recharge the batteries. I used about 15% to go there, but with half a load of fuel, ou can't get back to midway surfaced, you need to dive during the day (or night, but during the day planes will attack).

?????
In any of the fleet boats (except for the S class) running at 10 knots from midway to japan and back gives you fuel to spare when running at the surface all the time. If not, I suspect you have a fuel leak, otherwise, 10 knots should do the trick.

I don't think I had any damage, but I'll try to do a completely safe run (like in school mode or something) to make sure.
