I'd head back to port.

If you're just 3 days away from your home port and it would be only a matter of refueling and rearming then going to your home port and retrurning to your patrol area wouldn't even take very long. Everything else wouldn't make much sense .

Well, let’s see what’s on his mind, dear friends. First, what works for three days out works for thirteen, works for thirty, etc. With the advice of return-to-reload, I assume you don’t mean return to Home Port. SH3Commander will use that to tally for retirement, as is its wont, then what good would the renown do me. No, I would definitely drop by an alternate dock and thus run an extended mission. But continually being on the prowl is stressful and dangerous. If I am a week away or a month away from a friendly port, might I not accrue renown in a fashion afforded by less risk ? But again, would anyone know and share the value of renown for successful Contact Reports ?
Historically, the expenditure of major armament did not necessarily conclude a patrol. Those sailors expecting an early return, and a trip to the bordello or the train ride home, could be dourly disappointed. Many in such a condition were assigned to picket duty, called upon to shadow a known contact, or tasked with replacing another boat of less resources on station, perhaps broadcasting weather reports.
Some of you may remember the new vista opened by the Life Guard Duty Patrol Disk for the original Silent Hunter ? SH3 has made no provision for expended supply other than "Return to base". We should incorporate amenable tasks to our otherwise concluded patrols. This should also take into account use of crew consumables. Food spoiled. Potable water diminished below the distillery’s means to replenish. Yet these points can be relegated to an individuals style of campaigning.
The issue is Renown, and its equivalent modifiers, and the need to accumulate as much as possible with the least amount of risk or interaction. If an unarmed boat can achieve a stand-off position and make a successful Contact Report, how much Renown is awarded ? How many Contact Reports are allowed per patrol ? If we lose sight of a convoy / track, then reacquire it, can we be awarded Renown for reporting it again ?
Renown, ladies and gentlemen, it’s the end-all for me in this simulation. I want the safest way to reap a lot of it so I’ll have something to spend when I DO pull into port.

Play for the immersion not for the money. Just keep it real, send a contact report just to send it, don't think how much for it. After a good patrol, if BdU is pleased you'll earn your rep and get yourself some upgrades. Simple.
