I wasn't too spoiled when growing up.

Certainly not like this.

67 percent of Americans are unhappy with their country?

GREAT!

That means 67 percent of Americans want to improve their country!

America is a prosperous country, but you would be burying your head in the sand* if you thought it had no faults. The only way a nation can become great is when people are unhappy with something and they change that something!

I am unhappy with many, many aspects of the UK. That doesn't mean I am not proud of the good things we have or that I take them for granted.

In 1642 the people of England where amongst the richest in the world and enjoyed a high standard of living for the time, but they still wanted to have a greater nation and from that discontentment sprang the first Parliamentary Democracy.

In Short: Being unhappy with the things that are wrong is the first step to improvement in any case.

Feel free to correct anytime. Though I wasn't entirely replying to you so much as using your point as a reference to the original article, specific to the US.

Human progress is indeed continuous. What is a luxery today is an essential tomorrow. I think that if you don't complain about the worse parts of your country then you really aren't very aware of how things are. All the good that we enjoy is always at risk of being lost or diminished by a few bad decisions at the top of the ladder.

And of course that counts for all of the world.

I stopped reading that when kids set up lemonade stalls.

Seems like a variation on angry-man standup comedy. "There are too many kinds of coffee these days" etc etc.

There's a lot in there I find funny or disagreeable.

Yeah, it's once you get to the hospital that the fun starts.
And...surely electricity and running water aren't Bush Administration initiatives?
Those troops defending your freedoms from people who want to fight each other in a country thousands of miles away...and the Tiger Defense Rock argument...why doesn't the news reeport on all the planes that didn't crash....amber waves of grain....just like mother used to make..

How can people in this country be happy when Iran is going nuclear and threatening to wipe them off the map? How can they be happy when the Palestinians are firing rockets every day at civilians in Sderot? How can they be happy when nothing they try - not peace negotiations, not unilateral withdrawal, not military force - brings them security? How can they be happy when the peace process with the Palestinians gives new meaning to the word "dead," while the hope for a peace process with Syria is dying fast? How can they be happy when the IDF failed to win the war against Hizbullah? How can Israelis be happy when their political leaders seem to be a collection of crooks, incompetents, sex criminals and/or retreads?

To people who don't live in Israel, this is a mystery. A lot of Israelis probably can't figure it out, either.
Thats easy. One word. God.

You gotta walk through the valley of death to get to paradise so all this turmoil is worth it at the end.

Thats why they're happy! Thats why every God fearing nation is happy

I would not at all describe the Israel of today as a G-d fearing nation.

I'll refraze that. God fearing nations or nations that believe in the bibical God seem to have confidence that the mightly one will make everything right. So theirs no need to worry, be happy and rejoice when you can.

And whats wrong with that!

I'd have thought they were more fearful of those immediately across from their borders right now! :hmm:

It is a false hope. Need I point out to you numerous historical calamities that befell my people, when they thought that they had a free ticket to ride?

But isn't it better to have hope than to have none at all? What were seeing here is hope all around the world, Christian nations are been attacked, yet they still stand firm. Without hope your giving up. Without faith your nothing... And surely Avon you can't tell me you dont have hope or faith that one day it will be better for your ppl and christians alike.
When American & British went to war during WW2 with their allies close behind, the war was won not only on milatary strength but on faith in the almighty.

And who won...

Wasn't "Gott mitt uns" a German motto?

"Without faith you're nothing" - disagree..

Cool... and I believe it could also be directly translatted as: "Are your hands cold?"

You caught me

"God is with us" - there we go. I'll try not to regurgitate half-remembered fragments of a language I don't speak
