Diasastrous reinstall of Windows

You don't even need DVDs. Just compartmentalize your hard drive by having your windows installation seperate from your data partition so that if Windows needs to be reinstalled you can wipe out that entire partition without worrying about losing a thing. I've been very unlucky with WIndows and had to reinstall multiple times this year, but I didn't lose a single file (not until my entire drive failed hehe... he... huh

).

Just a bit of advice, windows needs to be the first thing on the hard drive. Its mental.

Yeah, I use partitions, its just that I wiped out a completely different drive (a 250Gb drive). I almost cried. I lost all my videos, deleted some 60 GB of games, lost all the mods for lots of games, and some personal stuff.

Checked out UBRS, but there are only lots of dead links to YouTube.

Use this http://www.recovermyfiles.com/

And your get back your movies, even if you have reformatted. you can go back as far as it allows, when i first use this program i retrieved data i lost like 2 years ago during a reformat. Great program to have.

how does it work?

do you get a list or does it also place back all the junk you had 2 years ago too?

Then the DVDs would've been nice, right?

Discs will break down, sooner or later. Partitioning is not a safety issue, but very handy to use.

If you own a Seagate/Maxtor, you can have Acronis 10 for free http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/sup...ads/discwizard
Very handy tool. Once Windows and your programs are installed (tip: run each program and set it up as you prefer, activate Windows and get it updated), run the Wizard (aka Acronis 10) to make a disc image of your drive. Next time you want a fresh/new install, just boot the image and it takes 15 minutes to restore your Windows/programs to the stage above. Works flawless, saves hours of playing disc jockey and is very easy to use.
If you don't own a Seagate, the 50 US$ for Acronis is still well spent.

Sorry I freaked out, Stabiz, but had just spend an evening trying to recover two desperate people's data

They lost pictures from holidays and vacations and what not from the past year - never taken a single copy of anything. Once the camera is full, upload to PC and everything's fine! Until the disc breaks down... then they come running and crying their little hearts out.

Sure, I am usually very paranoid about losing data, so i hear you. For some crazy reason none of my vids very moved to my external hd.

Thats strange it should of found them, did you use some uber reformat program? I recovered 13gigs of data using it.

Stabiz,
I am sure you know that there are some software companies that will recover data from your hard drive, even if overwritten, unless a super secure overwrite program was used.
If you google "data recovery" you will find some.

Ordinary quick format, and the search thingy only found new files.
