You are somewhat wrong. It is not only playable, it is actually enjoyable.
Well that too, more so when you get a big warship.

You can enable the weapons officer to ID the ship for you here

AirborneCZ, I can help fix that problem for you anyway. Edit your commands.cfg file and replace [Cmd257], [Cmd258] and [Cmd259] with the following:

[Cmd257]
Name=Report_time_to_turn
Ctxt=1
MnID=0x3F250002
Key0=0x47,s,"Shift+G"

[Cmd258]
Name=Report_time_to_course_end
Ctxt=1
MnID=0x3F250003
Key0=0x47,,"G"

[Cmd259]
Name=Report_range_to_course_end
Ctxt=1
MnID=0x3F250004
Key0=0x47,c,"Ctrl+G"

What you're adding here are the "Key0=" lines. This will give you "Range at current speed" on "Shift-G", "Time to course end" on "G" and "Range to course end" on "Ctrl-G" keys respectively.

Don't give up, it's a great game once you learn the quirks of it. For instance you said:

Quote:
Bloody submarine doesnt stop at the end of drawn course on 128x time compression and while Im clicking as manias on resupply button (to get it off screen) I get messages about taking damage, sub going off-shore to sand beach and career ends with medals but everyones dead!!!!
Well you always have to remember to go to map screen and click "Resume Course" icon whenever you load a save game. Otherwise the sub will ignore your plotted course and continue merrily along it's last heading until you run out of fuel or hit an island. (as it sounds like you did! Don't worry, same thing happened to me until I learned to always click "Resume course" )

You mean inaccurate ones posted by people who haven't taken the time to either learn the game , or to check in here for answers before they post their opinion?

Yeah... I can see where that would be off-putting.

I have been playing this game for a few weeks now. I am addicted to it. I haven't gotten this much into a computer game since uncommon valor. On the other hand I haven't been annoyed by a game as much this one in a while. Most of the annoyances have to do with some necessary micro-management. I don't know how many time I find my boat dead in the water I say to myself, damn, I forgot to relieve the crew from battle stations. It would be nice if I could a message saying "Hey captain wanna give the crew a break!" Another micro-management issue is always having to remember to to turn off auto-load torpedoes. After writing that I am thinking to myself, "maybe there is some text cfg file I can modify?"

All that being said a great game. I am new here and would like to send a hello to everyone.

Two things I'd like to comment on here...

1. The issue about crashing while following a plotted course into a harbor and the refit options popping up, this happened to me as well. When the initial refit/postpone/dock screen pops up your sub will continue straight ahead at whatever speed you've set it for and Time compression will remain active. I entered PH following a neatly plotted course on about 1000x time compression and my sub did not stop at the final waypoint but instead continued full steam ahead to ultimately plow into an American destroyer sinking us both. So I know the frustration, from that point on I always take the last few miles of approach slowly.

2. As to crapgame's irritation with micro management...I've had issues with battlestations etc...but this game isn't really that micro management heavy(Try playing some of the total war series), afterall its a simulation not an arcade style game.

Yes the game dropping to 1x time compression at the refit screen would be a welcome feature.

In the meantime dont plot a course that will "crash" into things and slow time compression as you approach.

Oh forgot to say hi to CG and welcome.

Crapgame, welcome! Glad you're enjoying SH4

Your comment on micromanagement though makes me think you've not played SH3, you should be glad that in SH4 all you have to do is remember to stand down the crew when things cool off.

In SH3 there was no watch rotation unless you did it yourself, you were constantly dragging your 60+ crew members (Individually!!! One at a time!!!) from quarters to duty stations and back again to keep a reasonably fresh crew on watch at all times. Believe me, SH4 is a 100% improvement in getting rid of micromanagement!

Yes a most welcome change.

Now if we could only get a 'reminder' that the crew has been at battle stations for "days".

Steam, have you put on the mod that shows the "Battle Stations" icon on every menu? Once I put that on, I found it a really good reminder that I needed to stand down my crew

I agree that the game isn't really that micro management heavy. That is why I said "necessary". My irritation is a passive-aggressive crew that won't say "hey, captain we've been at battle stations 3 days". Its a minor gripe but there are enough of these things in the game to drive me to drink. Somehow I don't get as annoyed when a destroyer rams me and the destroyer gets the worse end of the deal.

I can't understand the problems the original poster is having. Yes, the game has some problems and they need to be fixed, I've been adamant about that, but the game basically works and I'm enjoying playing version 1.2.

I have only had one instance where a saved game didn't load, and that was actually 2 nights ago. Yes, it's frustrating, but with ANY game a good rule is save often, because computers are funny and you never know what is going to happen.

Actually the last sub sim I played was on intellivision. I am glad that has feature has changed. When I was in the service I certainly knew when I should be relieved.

:rotfl:Thats what I thought untill I read the manual. You can actually move whole compartments of crew by left clicking on the compartment you want the men in, then right clicking on where you want to move the men from. After understanding the system, it was a breeze.

Been playing SH4 for two weeks, but still feel the pull of the altantic salt.

SH4 needs, one more concerted patch effort by UBi, then mods from the more than abundant talented modders in this forum will make it truly awesome.
