disappointed so far

so I have eventually bought SHIV last week, patched to ver 1.2, played two nights and Im really p....d so far...

no Bernard, weapon officer gone (i secretly hoped that even w manual targeting off there will be an option for need of visual ship ID)....and no navigator officer to count you maximum estimated range to travel on current speed...

but worse: first career mission from Brisbane I go patrol somehwere around Salmon Islands, I finish patrol, wasting all my eels, go back to Brisbane and just in port I notice Im supposed to patrol in another area... Ok i resupply at port, go there, get another 7 ships, running down on all resources I decide to go to Midway, when I reach it they order me to attack merchant ships...

didnt they read my reports on how many of them I sank or what???

so I take looong way back to salmon islands from Midway again, save the mission after I destroyed another bunch of boats, load game next day and guess what happens? Saved game wont load!!! ((

So i decide to start another career in 1943 knowing now what to expect from HQ.... After another long weeks and real life long hours of happy hunting I set off to resuply for this forward base in Solmon Islands koz they send me to take some photos of enemy fleet and guess what?? Bloody submarine doesnt stop at the end of drawn course on 128x time compression and while Im clicking as manias on resupply button (to get it off screen) I get messages about taking damage, sub going off-shore to sand beach and career ends with medals but everyones dead!!!!

so after about 12 hours of playing I wasnt able to finish single patrol.

really frustrating, not counting occasional graphics freeze ups....even if I match all game requirements

It's reports like this that has kept me from getting it. Loving SHII and GWX at the moment.

Its reports like this that make me realize some people have a lack of understanding of the game mechanics and the poor documentation furnished with the game.

I agree. Also, playing this game, you're going to experience the kind of frustration that the real Captains felt when things happen like... returning from your assigned patrol and happening on a juicy Task Force with an insufficient number of torps to attack it.

Some patrols will be exciting and some won't. You may have a patrol where you manage to hit very few ships and your sub is then heavily damaged by aircraft bombs, forcing you to limp home.

These kinds of things are part of the beauty of the game. Patched to 1.2 and modded to taste, this game is good. Patch 1.3 will make it very good indeed in my view.

I do not understand this. I load the game up/patch and play. Less than a hand full of issues. Don't give up on it, tweek your system, understand the game mechanics. It is a very good game.

SHII....I got it.....damn thing would crash on second career patrol. I dumped the game. Been collecting dust for the past 4 years. SH3/GWX....great game. I needed some refreshing game play. I got it in SH4. I dumped all my other games. This is all I play now. Such a shame you do not try it, might being doing the same thing I did.

Get some mods like RFB 1.28 for starters. Add some more mods...to your liking of course...We try to make the game better, as good as we can

Of course after the 1.3 patch SH4 will become even better, but i agree with AVGWarhawk 100%

I have been playing this game for a few weeks now. I am addicted to it. I haven't gotten this much into a computer game since uncommon valor. On the other hand I haven't been annoyed by a game as much this one in a while. Most of the annoyances have to do with some necessary micro-management. I don't know how many time I find my boat dead in the water I say to myself, damn, I forgot to relieve the crew from battle stations. It would be nice if I could a message saying "Hey captain wanna give the crew a break!" Another micro-management issue is always having to remember to to turn off auto-load torpedoes. After writing that I am thinking to myself, "maybe there is some text cfg file I can modify?"

All that being said a great game. I am new here and would like to send a hello to everyone.

Two things I'd like to comment on here...

1. The issue about crashing while following a plotted course into a harbor and the refit options popping up, this happened to me as well. When the initial refit/postpone/dock screen pops up your sub will continue straight ahead at whatever speed you've set it for and Time compression will remain active. I entered PH following a neatly plotted course on about 1000x time compression and my sub did not stop at the final waypoint but instead continued full steam ahead to ultimately plow into an American destroyer sinking us both. So I know the frustration, from that point on I always take the last few miles of approach slowly.

2. As to crapgame's irritation with micro management...I've had issues with battlestations etc...but this game isn't really that micro management heavy(Try playing some of the total war series), afterall its a simulation not an arcade style game.

Yes the game dropping to 1x time compression at the refit screen would be a welcome feature.

In the meantime dont plot a course that will "crash" into things and slow time compression as you approach.

Oh forgot to say hi to CG and welcome.

Crapgame, welcome! Glad you're enjoying SH4

Your comment on micromanagement though makes me think you've not played SH3, you should be glad that in SH4 all you have to do is remember to stand down the crew when things cool off.

In SH3 there was no watch rotation unless you did it yourself, you were constantly dragging your 60+ crew members (Individually!!! One at a time!!!) from quarters to duty stations and back again to keep a reasonably fresh crew on watch at all times. Believe me, SH4 is a 100% improvement in getting rid of micromanagement!

I agree that the game isn't really that micro management heavy. That is why I said "necessary". My irritation is a passive-aggressive crew that won't say "hey, captain we've been at battle stations 3 days". Its a minor gripe but there are enough of these things in the game to drive me to drink. Somehow I don't get as annoyed when a destroyer rams me and the destroyer gets the worse end of the deal.
